Henry Johnson © Andrea Canter Once a weekly weeknight feature at Andy's Jazz Club, the Henry Johnson Organ Express returns for a weekend engagement on Friday, February 22nd and Saturday, February 23rd with sets starting at 9:30 PM each night. The Organ Express consists of Chris Foreman on the Hammond B3 Organ, Peter Roothaan on tenor and alto saxophone, and Greg Rockingham on drums. Henry Johnson's musical roots run deep into gospel, blues, and jazz. His strongest and earliest influences were Kenny Burrell, George Benson, and most significantly, Wes Montgomery. While influenced by these great guitarists, Johnson also cites the music of Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, big bands, and jazz orchestras as integral forces which shaped his sound and style. Johnson's latest recording on A440 Music Group is called "Organic" and features Johson with the legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson backed by the Organ Express. |

Yoko Noge After the closing of HotHouse, it didn't take Yoko Noge long to find a new home for her Jazz Me Blues band's regular Monday Night gig. Now her fans can find her every Monday night at 9 p.m. at Andy's Jazz Club (11 East Hubbard St. in Chicago), which has been hosting them since January. Yoko Noge is equal parts inventive band leader/singer/pianist not to mention patient house mother to a group of unruly genius musicians. The success of Jazz Me Blues lies not only in the consistently high caliber of musicianship but in Yoko's careful shepherding and giving of space to Jazz Me Blues' constituent members. |

"There's a small subgenre of bands right now that are making a tricky but inevitable connection: the combustible energy, sardonic attitudes and harsh, crackling timbres of indie rock and the musicianship, improvisational logic and humanism of jazz. ... [ The Peace Between Our Companies (2005)] comes in like a lion with 'Starchild Cranium,' but that full-on clank has nothing to do with the serenity of the winding ballad 'Ella by Nightlight,' near the end. It's nice to hear a band with such radically different dispositions". - New York Times A Happy Apple Happy Apple is a midwest grown jazz trio with a devoted fan-base in the Twin Cities and a cult following worldwide. Happy Apple will bring their eclectic music on January 22 to Schuba’s in Chicago, Illinois; on January 23 to The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, Indiana; on January 24 to Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor, Michigan; on January 26 to The Ars Nova Workshop, Interntoional House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; on January 27 to The Kennedy Center in DC, Washington; on January 28 to The Lily Pad in Cambridge, Massachusetts; on January 29 to Joe’s Pub in New York, New York; on January 30 to Nighttown in Cleveland Heights, Ohio; on January 31 to The Annex in Madison, Wisconsin; onand then finally home on Feb 1 to the Cedar Cultural Centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Happy Apple was formed over ten years ago in Minneapolis, members of the band are David King (drums), Michael Lewis (saxophones) and Erik Fratzke (electric bass). All three members compose music for the group which places equal emphasis on improvisation. Happy Apple draws on several other genres; the group's members play in other bands ranging from indie rock and heavy metal to free jazz and electronic. The best known of these is The Bad Plus, in which King also plays drums. Dave acts as the emcee for the group as from the behind the drum kit he announces the tunes and frequently breaks into what could almost be a stand-up comedy act. But the music is no joke - these are highly skilled musicians who are serious about music, but never take themselves too seriously. |
