"I visited New York in '63, intending to move there, but I noticed that what I valued about jazz was being discarded. I ran into `out-to-lunch' free jazz, and the notion that groove was old-fashioned. All around the United States, I could see jazz becoming linear, a horn-player's world. It made me realize that we were not jazz musicians; we were territory musicians in love with all forms of African-American music. All of the musicians I loved were territory musicians, deeply into blues and gospel as well as jazz. " - Joe Sample

Written by Rhonda Laurie
Tuesday, 26 July 2005

When I heard from my fellow jazz vocalist from Missouri, Val Ticachek, that Sheila Jordan would be joining three brothers of jazz--Jon Hendricks,Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling--for a free concert at Millenium Park in Chicago, I recognized the historic significance of this event and made plans to go.

Thanks to the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs et al, which created the Chicago Jazz Partnership in support of local jazz artists, four of the greatest practitioners of vocalese performed at the Millenium Park concert pavilion on July 21, 2005. Most significantly, one of the originators of the art of vocalese, Jon Hendricks (who will be turning 84 in September), was part of this historic vocal jazz concert. Also performing were the great Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan, and Chicago native, Kurt Elling. Kurt Elling is of the most recent generation of vocalese artists /poets.

Written by Don Berryman
Friday, 15 July 2005
Chicago's Jazz Showcase will be presenting Gary Burton and his 'Generations' band for a week of dazzling music from July 19th through the 23rd. ImageVibraphonist and educator Gary Burton is known for developing the then-innovative technique of playing the instrument with four mallets, rather than the usual two. Winner of "Down Beat" magazine's "Jazzman of the Year" award, a member of the Percussion Hall of Fame, and Dean of Curriculum of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Burton is known worldwide as a musical innovator and master improviser. In a career that has spanned four decades, he's recorded with jazz legends like Stan Getz, George Shearing, and Quincy Jones, pop and rock stars like k. d. Lang and Eric Clapton, and lead the Burton Quartet. Currently on tour with his 'Generations" band of young and talented players, Burton continues to explore music. "Next Generation" is his latest CD - Click here for an streaming-audio preview.

Born in 1943 and raised in Indiana, Gary Burton taught himself to play the vibraphone and, at the age of 17, made his recording debut in Nashville, Tennessee, with guitarists Hank Garland and Chet Atkins. Two years later, Burton left his studies at Berklee College of Music to join George Shearing and subsequently Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964-1966.
