Two Chicago tenor titans face off at the Green Mill for a friendly "Battle of the Saxes" on Thursday, December 31, 8:30 pm -12:30 am with a jam session following until 4:00 am. "Battle of the Saxes" returns Friday, New Years from 9:00 pm-1:00 am and Saturday, January 2 8:00 pm-12:00 am. Von Freeman, the jazz legend who never left Chicago, and the returing Ed Petersen, who left to teach Applied Saxophon and Jazz Improvisation at the University New Orleans, will meet with battle it out backed by ta solid trio featuring Willie Pickens on piano, Brian Sandstrom on bass, and Robert Shy on drums.

The iconic Chicago saxophonist Von Freeman, who turned 86 this year,  created a unique and captivating tenor style in the 1940s and 50s but didn't lead his first recording in 1972 at the age of 49. When Freeman was in his 70s and playing better and stronger than ever, he began a series of albums that have made him a cover story in major jazz magazines, a much-demanded performer at festivals the world over, and the recipient of a mayoral proclamation (with a street named for him), as well as a doctorate from Northwestern University, at the age of 80.

For a celebration on the first day of Zwanzaa, the ever prolific Chicago master percussionist Kahil El ‘Zabar brings his quartet to the Velvet Lounge on Saturday, December 26th. The Quartet features Kahil  El’ Zabar (drums/percussion/vocals) with Kevin Nabors (saxes/percussion), Justin Dillard (keyboards/percussion), Junius Paul (bass/percussion). Kahil El'Zabar is a true "Renaissance Man," with a musical style and content that flows from ancient Africa to the modern world. In his own words, "The spirit of one's approach comes first before the technical. All the facility in the world with nothing that comes from the heart doesn't make good music. The basis of the strength of any artistic evolution has come from ethnicity."

Iconic Chicago saxophonist Von Freeman and his quintet will perform on Friday, December 11th and Saturday, December 12th at Andy's Jazz club, 11 E. Hubbard St., Chicago. The nusic begins at 9:30 p.m. each night and tickets are $15. Freeman created a unique and captivating tenor style in the 1940s and 50s but didn't lead his first recording in 1972 at the age of 49. When Freeman was in his 70s and playing better and stronger than ever, he began a series of albums that have made him a cover story in major jazz magazines, a much-demanded performer at festivals the world over, and the recipient of a mayoral proclamation (with a street named for him), as well as a doctorate from Northwestern University, at the age of 80.  Now 87 and still swinging, Von Freeman released his latest album, Vonski Speaks on Nessa Records last week.
