 David Berkman David Berkman is one of the most original and engaging pianist/composers working today. Music lovers will have three oppertunities to hear the David Berkman Quartet in two different conexts, first in the intimate jazz club environment of the Green Mill and then in the more reserved setting of a concert hall at Chicago Cultural Center's Cassidy Theater. The David Berkman Quartet features David Berkman, piano; Dick Oatts, alto sax; Ed Howard, bass; and Ted Poor, drums.As part of the New Millennium / New Music series the Dave Berkman Quartet will perform on Monday, April 30, 7 pm the Chicago Cultural Center, Cassidy Theater - 77 E. Randolph St., Chicago - adminssion is free! You can also hear the David Berkman Quartet at the Green Mill jazz club on Friday, April 27 starting at 9 pm on Saturday, April 28th starting at 8 pm. Each evening the cover charge is $12.

 Von Freeman © Andrea Canter Andy's Jazz Club will present and evening of exciting music from Chicago Jazz icon Von Freeman on Satrurday, April 14th at 9:30 p.m.Chicago saxophonist Von Freeman created a unique and captivating tenor style in the 1940s and 50s. He played steadily, recording with Charlie Parker and Andrew Hill. He made his first recording as a leader in 1972 at the age of 49, a couple more in the next several years, and then nothing more for a decade, them, in his 70s he a began a series of albums that have made the world rediscover him, DownBeat Magazine had him on their cover in 2001). Von is now a much-demanded performer at festivals the world over, and the recipient of a mayoral proclamation (with a street named for him), as well as a doctorate from Northwestern University, at the age of 80. This year he will turn 85 and he is still going strong. Born Earl Lavon Freeman on October 2, 1922, on the South Side of Chicago, Von grew up with his musical younger brothers George, a well-known Chicago guitarist, and drummer Bruz. At age 16 Von played tenor in Horace Henderson's big band for a year.

“All I can say is, if you know Jimmy Heath, you know Bop.” — Dizzy Gillespie Jimmy Heath, one of the world's most renowned saxophonists and composers, joins The Chicago Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Jon Faddis, in concert at The Black Orchid Supper Club, 230 W. North Avenue in Old Town, on Thursday, April 12, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the show are $35 and can be purchased at 312-344-6600. Heath, the middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers, has performed with nearly all of the jazz greats of the last 50 years, including Howard McGhee, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Jon Faddis. He has performed on more than 100 records and has written more than 140 compositions, which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Clark Terry, James Moody, Ahmad Jamal, Dexter Gordon, Ray Charles and numerous others. Heath's most recent release with The Jimmy Heath Big Band, "Turn Up the Heath" (Planet Arts Recordings), continues to receive rave reviews. A brilliant musician, composer, arranger and educator, he taught for more than a decade at the Aaron Copland School of Music at New York's Queens College and continues to present master classes around the world.
