"I can take it anywhere it goes, right? I love to play inside, outside...but the organ swings best when it swings, doesn't it? That's what that organ is good for. You could try to play hip all you want, but when you swing that thing, there's no other feeling like it." - Doctor Lonnie Smith

E.S.T. – An Extra Special Trio, Coast to Coast Print E-mail
Written by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor
By incorporating elements of European house, techno, drum ‘n’ bass and jungle with the influence of Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple and even Igor Stravinsky, e.s.t. has pulled off the virtually impossible feat of producing some of the most innovative, thoughtful and intensely rigorous jazz, while attracting an audience made up of manic fans from rock, pop and hip-hop.”—Global Rhythm, com

Know by the initials of their pianist/leader, the Esbjorn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.) travels coast to coast this month, with gigs at Yoshi’s in Oakland (January 11-12), in New York for the IAJE Convention at the New York Hilton(January 13), in Philadelphia at Zanzibar Blue (January 14), in Minneapolis at the Dakota (January 15), in Boulder, CO at the Boulder Theater (January 17), at the Hot House in Chicago (January 18), the Ark in Ann Arbor (January 19), and back east, to New York for three nights at the Jazz Standard (January 20-22), a night at Blues Alley in Washington (January 23), and finally to Boston at Scullers (January 24). And while E.S.T is just beginning to find an audience on this side of the Atlantic, their impressionistic creations, combining acoustic and electronic elements, have been garnering acclaim for over a decade in their native Sweden and throughout Europe. E.S.T was awarded "Best International Act” (2003) by the BBC, the Hans Koller Prize as the Best European Artist

Written by Ronaldo Oregano
ImageHear trumpet virtuoso, Arturo Sandoval at Yoshi's in Oakland onTuesday, December 27 through Sunday, January 1 with Alexis Arce on Drums, Tomas Cruz on Percussion, Javier Concepcion on Piano, Armando Gola on Bass, and Ed Calle on Sax.

Multiple-Grammy winning virtuoso trumpeter and international star, Arturo Sandoval, appears with his band to help bring in the New Year! From his days with the Cuban super-group Irakere to the United Nations Orchestra with Dizzy Gillespie to several award-winning albums, he has firmly established himself as a leader in jazz and classical music. He has a created a sound and style all his own. Expect a true world music mix of salsa, mambo, bolero, rhumba, danzon to straight-ahead jazz and r&b.

Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Miami, Florida home. A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the World’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist.

In the midst of a fragile, post-9/11 atmosphere, legendary bassist/ composer/ bandleader Charlie Haden was inspired to create his meditative American Dreams as a kind of healing balm for a shattered national psyche. As he wrote in the liner notes of that majestic 2002 symphonic offering: “I always dreamed of a world without cruelty and greed, of a humanity with the same creative brilliance of our solar system, of an America worthy of the dreams of Martin Luther King, and the majesty of the Statue of Liberty...This music is dedicated to those who still dream of a society with compassion, deep creative intelligence, and a respect for the preciousness of life -- for our children, and for our future.”

Two years later, in the aftermath of the 2004 presidential election, Haden was inspired to speak out this time using the Liberation Music Orchestra to articulate his concerns. Not In Our Name, the title of this new cd, stands as a musical manifesto for the disaffection many people in America and all over the world feel about the manner in which the present administration is conducting its affairs both at home and in the global arena.
