“Anat Fort is a daring pianist-composer whose inventive way with tunes and time suggests a huge talent in the making. And she understands the importance of a good working trio, which is why hers is so cohesive."    ---K. Leander Williams

On Sunday, March 21st, the MacPhail Center for Music hosts a rare appearance by Israeli pianist Anat Fort. At 3 pm, Fort will present a free, public workshop, “The Art of the Piano Trio,” followed by a 6 pm performance in Antonello Hall with local titans Adam Linz (bass) and J.T. Bates (drums). Tickets for the concert are $10 ($5 students), available at the door.

Born near Tel Aviv, Anat Fort studied classical piano. Drawn early to improvisation, her formative influences included Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley, Elvis Costello, John Coltrane and Egberto Gismonti. In the early 1990s, Anat came to the United States, seeking to gain a foundation in jazz tradition while also feeding her leanings toward more free approaches. Soon she had self-produced her debut recording, Peel, and received commissions to write for various ensembles, including chamber and chorus and orchestra. Her most recent commission was premiered at the Opera House in Tel Aviv in January 2006.

Anat has received two artist-in-residence grants from the Jerome Foundation as well as the Creative Connections Award from Meet the Composer. A performance with living legend drummer Paul Motian, bassist Ed Schuller and clarinetist Perry Robinson caught the attention of the ECM producer Manfred Eicher, leading to the acclaimed recording, A Long Story, released in 2007.

Now making her mark on the New York City alternative jazz scene and equally highly regarded in her homeland, Anat currently splits her time between Israel and the US and performs with bassist Gary Wang and drummer Roland Schneider in her touring band, the Anat Fort Trio.

Adam Linz is the Coordinator of Jazz at MacPhail and one of the area’s most esteemed creative musicians. He’s a founding member of Fat Kid Wednesdays and was recently on stage at the Walker Art Center in the debut performance of the Dave King Trucking Company. In addition to a busy local and international performance schedule, he directs the high school all-star ensemble, Dakota Combo, and is an instructor for the Minnesota Institute of Talented Youth Jazz Camp.
