Written by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor
Thursday, 22 December 2011

The big AQ bash is New Year’s Eve, but there’s a festive prelude this Friday night (December 23rd) when the Phil Aaron Trio (Billy Peterson, Kenny Horst) and special guests gather on stage for a night of great music and other holiday fixings. With your admission, you get a free CD as well as access to some special from the bar…and more.

Pianist Phil Aaron is a Chicago native who “grew up on Chicago food.”  He studied music at the Berklee College of Music and the University of Illinois.  After ten years in LA, he moved to Minneapolis in 1989, becoming fully immersed in the local jazz scene. By day,  Phil works as a composer of film and television scores winning an Emmy in 2007 for his scoring work on the PBS animated series, “Auto-B-Good.” As a performing jazz artist, Phil has shared the stage with Lee Konitz, Eric Alexander, Jim Rotondi, Jim Snidero, Byron Stripling, Barbara Morrison and Jackie Allen, among others, and has provided piano accompaniment to many local jazz singers and ensembles. An active recording artist as sideman and on five CDs of his own, Phil plays regularly with his own trio and with the Phil Hey Quartet. Drawing inspiration from Bill Evans, Cedar Walton, Tommy Flanagan, and Keith Jarrett, he “can swing hard or wax romantic at the keyboard" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

Bassist Billy Peterson sang in commercials at age 9 and played bass and drums in his father’s ensembles while in junior high. He played in a variety of combos and big bands throughout his high school years, including a summer tour with the Righteous Brothers and a stint with the Lawrence Welk All-Stars. After graduation, Billy played three years with Billy Wallace (Clifford Brown’s pianist) and co-founded the band Natural Life with saxman Bob Rockwell. He has recorded with Leo Kottke and performed or recorded with BB King, Johnny Smith, Lenny Breau, and the late Les Paul. In 1975, he appeared on Bob Dylan’s acclaimed Blood on the Tracks, and a few years later began a long-standing collaboration with Ben Sidran, which led to his ongoing work with the Steve Miller Band. Around the Twin Cities, Billy performs frequently at the Artists Quarter in a variety of configurations, with the “house band” for the PipJazz concert series at Landmark Center, and of course with the Peterson Family.

Kenny Horst isn’t busy enough running the Artists’ Quarter, he also tends the drum kit with many of the AQ’s visiting and local artists, and anchors the Tuesday Night Band weekly at the AQ. He also performs regularly with How Birds Work, The Five, Dean Granros Trio, Dave Karr Quartet, and What Would Monk Do. Says Don Berryman (Jazz Police), “Great hard-bop, soul jazz, and fusion chops and the sweetest guy you could meet.”

The Artists Quarter is located at 408 St Peter Street in the lower level of the Hamm Building in downtown St. Paul. Music begins at 9 p, $10 cover on Friday, December 23rd, which includes a free CD.  Visit www.artistsquarter.com. New Year’s Eve reservations still available but reserve soon at 651-292-1359.
