Dave Hagedorn©Andrea Canter There’s something special about jazz duets. The sparse instrumentation allows listeners to focus on the bare essentials of harmony, while two is ample for interactive collaboration. Great duos have often involved piano plus a melodic instrument such as saxophone and of course the human voice. Yet there are many other interesting combinations, not the least of which is piano and vibraphone. When the vibes are handled by Dave Hagedorn, with his former student Dan Cavanagh on piano, the results will surely be magical. Hagedorn and Cavanagh reunite on June 30th, an exciting way to close out a great month of music at the Artists Quarter in St. Paul. Their earlier appearance six months ago was a highlight of 2009.
Artist in Residence in the Music Department at St. Olaf College, Dave Hagedorn’s percussion duties have included the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Opera, and regular jazz gigs with the Phil Hey Quartet, Pete Whitman X-Tet, Out to Lunch Quintet and the duo Schag with percussionist Dave Schmalenberger. He also freelances in the Twin Cities with groups such as the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble, and Plymouth Music Series. After earning a degree in music education at the University of Minnesota, Hagedorn went on to earn an MM in percussion at the New England Conservatory and a DMA from the Eastman School of Music. Dave also studied and toured with the great George Russell, recording with Russell’s Living Time Orchestra on Blue Note. His own release as leader, Solid/Liquid, was released in 2002 on Artegra Records to rave reviews. Notes Don Berryman, Hagedorn “brings an integrated knowledge of complex harmony and rhythm that never fails to swing or to move anyone with ears.” Dan Cavanagh Pianist and composer Dan Cavanagh studied with Dave Hagedorn while earning his BM degree from St. Olaf College in Theory/Composition. After playing in the Nova Jazz Orchestra and working for MakeMusic! Inc. (makers of Finale notation software), Cavanagh went on to earn a Master's of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Oregon, receiving the Outstanding Graduate Student in Jazz Studies award upon graduation. Now Assistant Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington, Cavanagh has garnered numerous awards for his compositions, including a First Music Commission from the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band Classic program and "Prize Winner" in the Advanced category for the International Music Prizes for Excellence in Composition 2009, hosted by the National Academy of Music in Greece. He was a finalist in the 2005 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers competition, and he has received commissions from a wide range of groups across North America. In 2008, Cavanagh and his Arlington-based Jazz Emporium released Pulse (OAR Records), original music for big band featuring former teacher Dave Hagedorn on vibes. Recently, Dan (on piano) completed a recording with Twin Cities musicians, bassist Adam Linz and drummer Jay Epstein, a collection of originals and lesser-known standards. In addition to his Jazz Emporium, Dan leads a trio and sextet (Outburst) and toured last fall with a new quartet, Traverse Teacher and former student now come together, both accomplished jazz educators, performers and composers. Don't miss this special night on June 30th. The Artists Quarter is located in the lower level of the historic Hamm Building in downtown St. Paul, at 408 St. Peter Street. Show time is 9 pm. |
