"... a brilliant player, young yet wise beyond his years, and while scratching the surface, displays plenty of grit, street smarts, and a serious fun attitude, marking him as one of the most promising trumpet players in the 2000s."  -Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic.com

Corey Wilkes and Black Slang will appear at Andy's jazz club on Friday, November 20th and Saturday, November 21st. Black SLang features (trumpet/flugel/efx), Kevin Nabors (tenor sax), YaW (vocals), Phenom (mc), Will Kurk (keys), Frankie Blaze (guitar), Junius Paul (bass), Anthony Capers (drums/mpc), Mashaune Wilkes (African Dance), Tosha Alston (African Dance), and Imania Detry (African Dance). Recently touring with the James Carter Quintet, Corey Wilkes first burst onto the music scene in 2002 and landed in the soul of the Chicago Jazz Club scene. He then filled Lester Bowie's vacant trumpet seat in the the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Big shoes to fill for a new musician but Corey isn't an ordinary musician.

His soulful notes can be heard gracing a variety of projects such as DJ sets by Logic, Osunlade and Josh Deep; tracks on Hidden Beach's Unwrapped Vol 4, as well as Kahil El Zabar's Ascension Loft Series.

Corey has shared the stage and knowledge with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Ledisi, Soulive, James Moody, Meshell Ndegeocello, Mike Phillips, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Fred Anderson, Will Calhoun, Malcom Jamal-Warner and so many more. In addtion he performs extensively in Europe as well as Africa and South America.

Corey holds down posts as an Artist in Residence and Board Member with the Jazz Institute of Chicago and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.

Corey's first album as a band leader titled "Drop It" was released mid-2008 receiving good reviews from Downbeat Magazine, AllAboutJazz.com, the Chicago Tribune and BlogCritics.org...and was also nominated for Best Jazz Album 2008 for the 2009 Chicago Music Awards.
