Jason Marsalis Jason Marsalis, the youngest son of Ellis Marsalis, will bring the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet to the Jazz Showcase at Dearborn Station in Chicago on Thursday, September 10th through Sunday 13th. Although known as a drummer and co-founder of Los Hombres Calientes, most recently Jason has been playing vibraphone. In December of 2008, Marsalis recorded his first album as a leader on the vibes entitled Music Update. Jason is part of the famous New Orleans jazz tradition, which has created innumerable legendary drummers, such as Warren “Baby” Dodds, Ed Blackwell, James Black and Herlin Riley. He also belongs to a renowned musical family; his father Ellis and older brothers Wynton, Branford, and Delfeayo have dramatically influenced the jazz world for almost two decades and Jason is no exception, possessing the technical virtuosity, innate rhythmic aplomb and the compositional ingenuity associated with his forbearers. But deep roots haven’t prevented him from also developing a refreshingly progressive approach, fueled by eclectic influences (he’s just a likely to reference Igor Stravinsky, Tito Puente and Billy Cobham as Max Roach and Art Blakey) and diverse professional associations in his native New Orleans.

Jason has not only inherited the virtuosity and compositional skills associated with the Marsalis family, and his first professional gig was with his father at the age of twelve. Later he studied classical percussion at Loyola University in New Orleans, and worked as a sideman with straight-ahead combos, funk fusion bands, a Brazilian percussion ensemble (Casa Samba), and even a Celtic group. He introduced percussionist Bill Summers to trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and together they co-founded the wildly successful Los Hombres Calientes. Then, at the height of that band's popularity, Jason left to join up with acclaimed pianist Marcus Roberts. In addition to leading his own group, Jason continues to work as a sideman with Marcus Roberts, Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis, John Ellis, and Dr. Michael White among others. The Jazz Showcase is located at Dearborn Station, 809 S. Plymouth Court in Chicago. Check the Jazz Showcase website for updated information at www.jazzshowcase.com or call (312) 360-0234. |
