This Twin Cities suburb is probably not the first place you think of for hot jazz venues. Yet there’s intermittent opportunities to hear the area’s finest musicians in Bloomington. The Bloomington Center for the Arts provides one of the area’s most pleasing concert venues, hosting a few jazz-related shows every year, including Tanner Taylor’s Tribute to Oscar Peterson and Sisters in Song last winter. Annually, there’s the Bloomington Jazz Festival at the Normandale Lake Bandshell. Next Sunday, August 9th, from 2:30 – 7:30 pm,  the city’s Arts in the Parks program (sponsored by the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Division) presents a great afternoon of swinging jazz featuring some of the Twin Cities’ most accomplished performers. There’s great food and free music!

This year’s lineup:

  • 2:30 pm, Vic Volare & the Volare Lounge Orchestra. This Ohio native has built a reputation for his silvery voice and accomplished orchestra featuring some well-known Twin Cities musicians—Chuck Keane on saxes, Jeff Levine on trumpet, Matt Darling on trombone, Joel Schapira on guitar, Matt Senjum on bass, and Corey Needleman on drums. Forget that you are on a suburban grassy knoll, Vic will transport you to a small nightclub in Vegas.
  • 3:50 pm, Christine Rosholt Quintet. Always engaging regardless of the stage or weather, vocalist Christine Rosholt put her theater background to good use selling a long like selling a script. She’s joined by longstanding and virtuosic partners, Tanner Taylor on piano, Graydon Peterson on bass, Jay Epstein on drums, and the ever-effervescent Dave Karr on sax and flute.

    5:50 pm, George Maurer Group.
One of the area’s pre-eminent keyboardists, composers and producers, George’s resume includes arranging music for the Chiffons, playing for members of the Bill Clinton White House, and writing original music for the Saint Paul City Ballet. The George Maurer Group is but one of his many projects, and includes Mugsy Spanier on guitar, Jeff Engholm on bass, Scott Chabot on drums, Jeff Nordquist on trumpet, and Jim Ten Bensel on trombone. That’s enough to keep Bloomington awake well into Monday.

The Bloomington Jazz Festival will take place at the Normandale Lake Bandshell (5901 84th Street, Bloomington) on Sunday, August 8th, from 2:30 - 7:30 pm. Parking available in the ramp of the 8500 Tower of Normandale Lake Office Park on 84th Street. There is no admission charge!
