Kurt Elling © Andea Canter Considered by many to be he finest male jazz vocalist of his generation, Kurt Elling has just released a live CD Dedicated To You, Elling’s creative re-imagining of John Coltrane's collaboration with “romantic balladeer” Johnny Hartman [watch for an upcoming Jazz Police review]. Johnny Hartman was the only singer ever to record with Coltrane. The Coltrane/Hartman 1963 album of ballads, Dedicated To You, is considered a masterpiece, a perfect synergy of ‘Trane’s passionate tenor saxophone and Hartman’s sensual baritone vocals. Kurt Elling will be celebrating that music with the Laurence Hobgood trio with special guest Ernie Watts at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz on Monday, July 6th; at Yoshi's in San Francisco on Thursday, July 9th through Sunday, July 12th; and at Catalina's Jazz Club in Los Angeles on Tuesday, July 14th through Saturday, July 18th.

Ernie Watts Two-time Grammy Award winner Ernie Watts is one of the most versatile and prolific saxophone players on the music scene. In a diverse career that has spanned more than 40 years, he has been featured on over 500 recordings by artists ranging from Cannonball Adderley to Frank Zappa, always exhibiting his unforgettable trademark sound. After 15 solo records for a variety of labels, large and small, Watts started Flying Dolphin Records, a company he runs with his wife Patricia. Flying Dolphin (distributed by Burnside Distribution Corp.) is a new chapter for the artist’s creative expression. Watts’ eclectic mix of career activities includes current work with Kurt Elling in a tribute to Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane with string quartet. He has taken part in Jazz at the Kennedy Center for Billy Taylor, and recently toured Australia with Billy Cobham and orchestra.” A typical year finds Watts touring Europe with his own quartet, in Asia as a featured guest artist and performing at summer festivals throughout North America and Europe, often with Charlie Haden’s Quartet West. He gives back to the music by conducting student clinics and master classes. Watts has also compiled a collection of orchestral arrangements for guest soloist appearances with symphonies. And there is the occasional “hometown gig” with the Ernie Watts Quartet in Los Angeles, where he is still based. Laurence Hobgood After moving to Chicago in 1988, Laurence Hobgood established a local presence leading his own quintet and joining forces with some of Chicago's premier players like Ed Peterson, Fareed Haque, and most importantly Paul Werlico. The group Trio New, with Hobgood, Wertico, and bassist Eric Hochberg, played to critical acclaim and established a serious connection with Wertico that spans many projects and ensembles. Hobgood received three consecutive fellowships to perform in the Aspen Music Festival's 90, 91 and 92 seasons. There he played with Clark Terry, Gary Burton, Eddie Daniels, Sheila Jordon, Bob Mintzer, and Mark Whitfield among others. In 1993 Hobgood met vocalist Kurt Elling and began a collaboration which resulted in Elling's signing with the storied Blue Note label; with Hobgood as his co-producer and musical director Elling received Grammy nominations for each of his first three Blue Note releases. The two of them were named 1995 Chicagoans of the year in the Arts by the Chicago Trbune.
