Reynold Philipsek © Andrea Canter Dubbed East Side, a new ensemble led by acclaimed swing guitarist Reynold Philipsek will celebrate their debut CD release on April 11th at the 318 Café in Excelsior. For $12 admission, each patron will receive a copy of the CD as well as a great evening of music. Long associated with the Twin Cities Hot Club, Philipsek first heard the music of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt as an eighteen-year-old, and has been pursing the spirit of Django and Stephane Grapelli ever since. With 25 recordings to his credit, his resume includes duo collaborations with guitarist and TCHC cohort Robert Bell. He’s also worked recently with singer Rhonda Laurie in Sidewalk Café.
Matt Senjum © Andrea Canter Joining Philipsek for East Side are harmonica virtuoso Clint Hoover, bassist Matt Senjem and percussionist Michael Bissonnette. Although a math major in college at the U of M, and a computer programmer/analyst for the Mayo Clinc, bassist Matt Senjum has been active on the Twin Cities Jazz scene for the past 12 years, including appearances with the Creole Four, Parisota Hot Club, and Robert Bell’s Bellcats. Clint Hoover was inspired to take up the harmonica after hearing Muddy Waters. He’s taught at the West Bank School of Music, Minneapolis Technical College, and Homestead School of folk music. Among his recordings are Dream of the Serpent Dog and Take Your Time Mr. Brown. Michael Bissonnette has spent the past thirty years studying the drum set and world percussion—including berimbau, cuica, pandiero, doumbec and djembe. Locally he has played with Laura MacKenzie, Robert Everest, Glen Helgeson and more. The 318 Café is located at 318 Water Street in Excelsior. CD release at 8 pm. |
