“Bobby is one of the best musicians in the world." McCoy Tyner
Bobby Hutcherson Vibraphone master and jazz pioneer Bobby Hutcherson will appear at Yoshi's in Oakland with Special Guest Anthony Wilson on Friday, January 30th through Sunday, February 1st. Along with Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson, Hutcherson is one of the true innovators on the vibraphone. In his hands, the vibraphone is an instrument of subtlety and power, and Hutcherson uses it to create sounds that are dynamic and swinging. Grammy-nominated guitarist/composer/arranger Anthony Wilson is one of the leading jazz musicians of his generation.
Easily one of jazz's greatest vibraphonists, Bobby Hutcherson epitomized his instrument in relation to the era in which he came of age the way Lionel Hampton did with swing or Milt Jackson with bop. He isn't as well-known as those two forebears, perhaps because he started out in less-accessible territory when he emerged in the '60s playing cerebral, challenging modern jazz that often bordered on avant-garde. Along with Gary Burton, the other seminal vibraphone talent of the '60s, Hutcherson helped modernize his instrument by redefining what could be done with it — sonically, technically, melodically, and emotionally. In the process, he became one of the defining (if underappreciated) voices in the so-called "new thing" portion of Blue Note's glorious '60s roster. Hutcherson gradually moved into a more mainstream, modal post-bop style that, if not as adventurous as his early work, still maintained his reputation as one of the most advanced masters of his instrument.
Anthony Wilson © Lourdes Delgado “Always a potentially important talent, Anthony Wilson has risen to the top level of the crowded filed of jazz guitarists.” –Don Heckman, LA TIMES
Anthony Wilson has recorded six solo albums since 1997, the most recent of which, Power of Nine (2006, Groove Note) was included in The New Yorker’s roundup of the top ten jazz recordings of the year. Anthony is the son of legendary composer/arranger/bandleader Gerald Wilson. A sensitive and gifted accompanist as well as a formidable soloist, Anthony Wilson has been an indispensable member of Diana Krall’s band since he joined her in 2001 for a series of performances at Paris’ Olympia Theater that were collected on the Grammy-winning CD/DVD “Live In Paris” (Verve), already widely considered a classic
A skilled, inspired composer and arranger with a deep understanding of tradition and an equal willingness to take risks, Wilson won the Thelonious Monk Institute International Composers’ Competition in 1995, and has received numerous commissions for small- and large-scale original works. Every year since 2000, Anthony Wilson’s considerable talents as a “triple-threat” guitarist/composer/arranger have landed him at the top levels of all three of those categories in Downbeat Magazine’s International Critics’ poll.
