Jeff RinearİAndrea Canter If I played trombone, or any horn for that matter, and I wanted to assemble a sympathetic and virtuosic rhythm section, I wouldn’t hesitate to call on pianist Laura Caviani, bassist Gordon Johnson and drummer Phil Hey. Trombone master Jeff Rinear knows how to build a band, and his quartet featuring Caviani, Johnson and Hey will take flight at the Artists Quarter in downtown St. Paul on Wednesday night, November 19th. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Jeff Rinear has a diverse musical background, including touring with the Artie Shaw Orchestra before settling in the Twin Cities. Locally he has performed with Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick, the Temptations, Natalie Cole and Kenny Rogers; has recorded with Percy Strother, Pete Whitman and Lucia Newell; and has had regular gigs with the Butanes, JazzMN Big Band, Cedar Avenue Big Band, Bill Banfield’s B-Magic Orchestra and Whitman’s X-Tet. In particular, Jeff appears as featured soloist on Pete Whitman’s Departure Point and Sound of Water, and as lead trombonist on the JazzMN Big Band’s debut recording.
Laura CavianiİAndrea Canter Laura Caviani is one of the areas busiest jazz performers, composers and educators. Her formal education included degrees from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI and the University of Michigan; study in Japan at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village; and a grant to study with another highly inventive pianist, Joanne Brackeen. She has toured with Toots Theilemans, Bob Mintzer, Dave Liebman, and Karrin Allyson, and has released five acclaimed recordings as well as appearing on a long list of CDs of local musicians. Currently she leads her own trio and holds the piano chair for the Pete Whitman X-Tet, as well as backing top vocalists and instrumentalists.
Gordy JohnsonİAndrea Canter Bassist Gordy Johnson graduated from the Eastman School of Music where he majored in flute. He toured with Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, and the Paul Winter Consort, has appeared on over 50 recordings, and has kept time for most local and many visiting artists. He has released four albums featuring trios with different combinations of pianists and drummers (Trios, Volumes 1, 2, 3.0 and Trios 4). When he is not holding down rhythm sections with his bass lines or touring with vocalist Stacey Kent, Johnson can often be found inside the piano, tuning it up at the top clubs and concert halls in the Twin Cities. A former student of Ed Blackwell, Phil Hey is one of the busiest drummers in town (he plays with everyone!) and teaches jazz drum at Macalester College and the University of Minnesota. He’s performed with Kenny Barron, Dewey Redman, Charlie Rouse, Benny Carter, and Benny Golson, leads his own acclaimed Quartet, anchors the Out to Lunch Quintet, and is frequently on the bandstand with Laura Caviani, Pete Whitman, and touring national artists. He also tours nationally with vocalist Stacey Kent. His quartet release, Subduction, topped many “best of the year lists” for 2005. Phil HeyİAndrea Canter For outstanding musicianship and collaboration, there will be no better foursome on the bandstand this season than the Jeff Rinear Quartet. The Jeff Rinear Quartet will perform at the Artists Quarter on November 19th at 9 pm. The AQ is located at 408 St. Peter Street in downtown St. Paul; www.artistsquarter.com
