Since 1998, Minnesota’s big band enthusiasts have had the fortune to hear performances by the JazzMN Big Band. Formed to “promote, preserve and perpetuate jazz, America's indigenous art music, through performance, historical preservation, and education," this non-profit group is an amalgam of the best band artists in the Twin Cities. Over the past nine seasons, the JazzMn Big Band has presented a who’s who list of guest artists, including Arturo Sandoval, Phil Woods, James Moody, Dave Weckl, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco, Bob Mintzer, Kevin Mahogany and more.  Under the direction of bandleader/trumpeter Doug Snapp, the 10th anniversary season of the JazzMN Big Band promises to be the best ever. All concerts at begin at 7:30 pm at the Hopkins High School Performing Arts Center.

October 18th, The Latin Side of Conrad Herwig. An alum of the Clark Terry Big Band and Buddy Rich Orchestra, trombonist Conrad Herwig has also performed with Slide Hampton’s World of Trombones, Mario Bauza’s Afro-Cuban Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, and the big bands of Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Mintzer, Mel Lewis, Henry Threadgill, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and Frank Sinatra. Among his small ensemble collaborators have been Max Roach, Red Garland, Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez and more. With seventeen recordings as leader, Herwig’s acclaimed Latin projects have included the recordings The Latin Side of John Coltrane, Sketches of Spain y Mas and his Grammy-nominated Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles. Guest vocalist for the first half of the program will be Twin Cities’ chanteuse Charmin Michelle.

Connie Evingson
December 20th, JazzMN Holiday with Connie Evingson. More than a big band treat for the holidays is the opportunity to hear locally based, nationally acclaimed vocalist Connie Evingson in the rare setting of big band charts. From her popular gigs with Moore By Four to her foray into gypsy jazz to her more recent release of songs by and with Dave Frishberg, Connie is one of the most versatile performers around. Her recordings have included tributes to Peggy Lee, the Beatles, the “elders” of jazz and Django Reinhardt. We can count on some tunes from her Secrets of Christmas release as well as some surprises.

February 14th, Nicholas Payton’s Gumbo Nouveau. New Orleans has a long tradition of trumpet masters, from Louis Armstrong to Wynton Marsalis. And now Nicholas Payton, one of the brightest stars of his generation, bringing his blend of bop and “gumbo” to ignite the big band stage. Son of bassist/sousaphonist Walter Payton, Nicholas played with his father in the Young Tuxedo Brass Band well before his teens, and later became a protégé of the Marsalis family. At only 19, he joined Elvin Jones’ band, soon serving as its music director. Only 35, Payton has a series of acclaimed recordings as leader. If you love trumpet, this concert is a perfect Valentine.

Ken Peplowski
April 4th, Ken Peplowski. Multi-reedist Ken Peplowski grew up playing in polka bands in his native Cleveland. By high school he had branched out to teaching, playing in jazz bands and gigging around town. His early career included stints with the Tommy Dorsey band and working with Sonny Stitt. Benny Goodman, returning from retirement, hired Peplowski to play tenor sax. Over the past twenty years, Peplowski has been playing in a broad range of musical contexts on clarinet and sax, teaching and recording. Of his skills on clarinet, the late Mel Tormé remarked, “The man is magic.” As entertaining as he is talented, Ken Peplowski helps close the 10th JazzMn Big Band season on a swinging note.
