“This [2007] was one of the best festivals in a long time!  It was great to have a jazz festival actually present America’s classical music.”– Regina Carter, jazz violinist and 2007 Artist in Residence

The largest free jazz festival in North America brings a long list of acclaimed performers and local standouts to six stages when the 29th annual Detroit Jazz Festival gets underway on August 29th. “A Love Supreme: The Philly-Detroit Summit” celebrates the music and musicians of Motor City and the City of Brotherly Love, under the direction of Artist-In-Residence and monster Philly-born bassist Christian McBride. Taking over downtown Detroit, the festival will stretch from Hart Plaza to Campus Martius, with Woodward Avenue in-between transformed as a pedestrian corridor. A broad range of music will be incorporated into the weekend, with blues, gospel and R&B sprinkled among one of the world’s most high-powered list of jazz acts. The nonprofit festival is supported in large part by an endowment from Mack Avenue Records.

Detroit natives Dianne Reeves, Kenny Garrett, and Geri Allen join Philadelphians Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Pat Martino, along with McBride and many more. Special Summit events include an opening night tribute to Motown’s Marvin Gaye, with Lalah Hathaway, Rahsaan Patterson, and newcomer (Twin Cities native) José James, backed by a Detroit all-star big band, led by Christian McBride; bop band fireworks with Philadelphians Randy Brecker, Bootsie Barnes and Christian McBride, and Detroiters Geri Allen, Karriem Riggins and Perry Hughes; a tribute to Alice Coltrane led by son Ravi with  Jack DeJohnette, Geri Allen and Charlie Haden; and “Leebop,”  a tribute to Philly great Lee Morgan with rising trumpet starts Dominick Farinacci, Jeremy Pelt and Brandon Lee. On the Absopure Waterfront Stage.

Other Highlights

It’s hard to single out events, but among the other headline acts will be a big band fest featuring the Count Basie Big Band with Nnenna Freelon and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra with Kenny Burrell; a festival of the bones with trombonists Slide Hampton, Robin Eubanks, Steve Turre, Trombone Shorty and Bonarama; a guitar summit with the likes of Pat Martino, Derek Trucks and Kenny Burrell.
