"Eventually, in order to find out if you really have what it takes, you have to go to the center, and that's New York...you can only do so much in your hometown." - Sonny Fortune

Jim Rothermel

The Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay will present the Jim Rothermel Swingtet on Sunday, August 31st from 4:30 to &:30 PM. The Jim Rothermel Swingtet (formerly known as Neoclassic Swin) plays the great music from the classic Big Band Era, 1935-1945. While the group's music also reflects more modern influences, it draws primarily from bands such as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Charlie Barnet, Woody Herman and Count Basie. Some of the musicians who have performed with the Swingtet are: Shota Osabe, Ron Borelli and Larry Vuckovich, piano; Al Obidinski, Steve Hanson, Blake Richardson and Jeff Neighbor, bass; Bil Nawrocki, Dave Black, Jim Zimmerman and Tony Johnson, drums; and Glen Deardorff, Jim Putman and Duncan James, guitar. With leader Jim Rothermel performing on saxophones and clarinet with Noel Jewkes (saxophones & clarinet), Steve Campos (trumpet & flugelhorn), Larry Vuckovich (piano), Al Obidinski (bass), Tony Johnson (drums), and a  Trombone player to be named.

The band performs in a variety of contexts: festivals and concerts, private events, elementary school music programs, and as part of Musicians Union sponsored cable television appearances. Its members are seasoned professional musicians with a combined wealth of musical experience, which includes work with such diverse luminaries as Duke Ellington, Bob Scobey, Benny Goodman, Anita O'Day, Billy Butterfield, Jay McShann, Charles Brown, Bob Crosby, Leon Redbone, Dr. John, Mose Allison, George Barnes, Jimmy Witherspoon, Chet Baker, Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth, Lorna Luft, Sonny Stitt, Dianne Schuur, Vince Guaraldi, Toots Thielmans, Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry, Mel Torme, Blue Mitchell, Art Pepper, Bob Hope, Frankie Laine, Tony Bennett, Connie Haines, Helen O'Connel, Steve Allen, Bing Crosby, Tex Beneke, Les Elgart, Mugsy Spanier, Red Nichols, The Ink Spots, The Mills Brothers, Joe Williams and Woody Allen.

Larry Vuckovich
Larry Vuckovich, a native of Montenegro, came to San Francisco with his family in 1951, at the age of 14 and began playing professionally at 23, a protégé of piano legend Vince Guaraldi. He was soon plying the fertile San Francisco jazz scene of the early sixties, leading his own combos, sitting in from North Beach to Haight Street and performing regularly with stars like Mel Torme and Jon Hendricks. With Hendricks, Vuckovich toured Europe, headquartering in Munich from 1968-1970. Vuckovich returned to San Francisco and in 1978 becoming the house pianist at the Keystone Korner. He dug in and his career gathered steam. He released Blue Balkan, the first of several highly acclaimed LPs under his own name, in 1980. After a successful 5-year stay in New York City, Vuckovich returned in San Francisco in 1990 to establish Club 36, a jazz venue located at the top of the Union Square Hyatt. He’s been a mainstay on the Bay Area music scene ever since, appearing regularly with his Blue Balkan Ensemble, his Young at Heart Ensemble, a wide variety of combos and styles.
