Carei Thomas © Howard A. Gitelson "Like a Gospel Holy Roller Party, my performance pieces draw narrative materials from non-linear, fractal-like formations of story and expression. Interpretation and improvisation expand our view of time and place to where memory and experience become signifiers in a complex semiotic mix of language, sound, and performance. My interest is to elevate the listening audience to some experiential place where emotions are readily “juxtaported” by sound and etymological word content". - Carei Thomas On Thursday, July 24 the Walker presents an evening of performance and verse, featuring a host of local and national artists from various disciplines in celebration of Minneapolis-based composer/pianist Carei Thomas’ 70th birthday and his ongoing contribution to creative improvised music. The concept of Gift Shops was developed during Thomas’ recovery from Guillian-Barre Syndrome when he began to reflect on the gifts of professionals and ordinary people. “I see Gift Shops serving as energizing entities in the community wherever there is a need to reinforce the human spirit.”
