“A lot of musicians made so many sacrifices just so I could do what I am doing today. It is like being handed a gift. I have tried to be the best I can. I have never rested on my laurels. I just feel fortunate that I am able to do what I am doing.” - McCoy Tyner
McCoy Tyner McCoy Tyner is certainly the most influential living jazz pianist. Only Bill Evans has had as much influence on the sound of jazz piano in the post-bop era. This year Telarc and Mosaic each released McCoy Tyner collections highlighting significant recordings from two distinct periods in his career. Mosaic's 3-CD set Mosaic Select: McCoy Tyner (MS-025) selects tracks from seven Blue Note session between 1968 through 1970, and Telarc's Afro Blue (CD-83682) is a collection of recordings from five Telarc CD's recorded some thirty years later between 1999 and 2004. Anyone wishing to get to know this great pianist would benefit from both these releases, and those whose collections don't include one of these periods could quickly remedy that situation. The list of contributing musicians on these two sets reads like a "who's who" of jazz: Elvin Jones (who was in John Coltrane's quartet with Tyner), Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Gary Bartz (on both sets), Allice Coltrane, Herbie Lewis, Billy Hart, Herbie Laws, Bobby Hutcherson, Charnett Moffe, Terence Blanchard , Christian McBride, Lewis Nash, Steve Turre and many more (a complete cross reference of musicians, groups and tracks are listed below).
 Mosaic Select: McCoy Tyner
This Mosaic, all recorded by set covers the last two years of McCoy Tyner's tenure with Blue Note including the releases Expansions, Extensions, Asante and Cosmos. Coming right after Tyner's landmark recordings with Coltrane, these sessions represent some of the formative and defining statements in post-bop piano. By the late seventies, he was one of the most popular and best-paid acoustic jazz artists in the world. The music from these five innovative sessions, recorded over a 25-month period, represents the seeds of that success. Although a sample, this set could be considered essential because it include recordings from the double-album Cosmos that has never been released on CD. Afro Blue
Telarc's Afro Blue , released on November 13, 2007, is a cross section of Tyner’s greatness captured in eight tracks culled from his Telarc catalog (McCoy Tyner and the Latin Jazz All-Stars, McCoy Tyner with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster, Jazz Root, Land of Giants, and Illuminations). In groups ranging from the nine piece Latin Jazz Ensemble, a quintet, a quartet, a trio and solo piano, this collection demonstrates how Tyner has never stopped innovating and has only gotten stronger over the years. The title track is a riveting 12 and a half minute burner. Tyner's solo performance of Gershwin's "Summertime" is a harmonic revelation, and along with his reinterpretation of "If I Were a Bell" with Bobby Hutcherson demonstrates how he breathes new life into these often played standards. Telarc did a great job selecting these tracks showcasing one of the most significant jazz artists of our time.
