The show will feature the music of such great pairings as Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland and Bobby Darin, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles and Betty Carter, Frank Sinatra and Keely Smith, and more. The singers will have the expert support of Martha Mathewson, piano; Aaron Koskela, bass; Dave Perry, drums; and Dana Mathewson, sax.
Attracted to the songs she heard on her parents’ records as child, Paula Lammers found music to be her connection to school and community, ultimately majoring in music at Gustavus Adolphous College and earning a master’s in vocal performance (opera) at the University of Minnesota. After concentrating on teaching at the high school and college level, Paula found herself pulled back into performing as part of the Zephyr Cabaret, the series of musical performances aboard the Minnesota Zephyr. It was a tug that wouldn’t let go. Still involved with the Minnesota Opera, Paula spent five years aboard the Zephyr in Stillwater, singing standards and growing an audience, before finally releasing her debut CD, Blanket of Blue, in 2005. Recently Paula “retired” from the Zephyr to concentrate on her jazz gigs at such venues as the Dakota County Music Café, her nine-piece band Cloud Nine, and her collaboration with Reeves Carey. She also performs regularly with the River City Jazz Orchestra and teaches through workshops and private lessons. From his first vocal solo as a second grader, Reeves Carey has been following his musical muse. A theater major at Concordia College, Reeves spent eleven years singing in clubs throughout the Twin Cities and New York City. After some time off, he returned to singing as a member of the Metropolitan Male Chorus, and later was one of the founders of the Nostalgics Vocal Quartet. He also sang with The Bill Dean Big Band in the mid 90s, which became The Classic Big Band. He’s also performed with the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Band at the International Glen Miller Festival and with the Roseville Big Band, the Chamberlain Big Band, Reminisce, and Sentimental Swing. And for ten years, Carey has been singing with the Zephyr Cabaret—where he met Paula Lammers. Cohorts with the Zephyr Cabaret, Paula and Reeves began performing as a duo in 2001, creating their Girl and Boy Singer partnership in 2005. Their material is drawn from the Great American Songbook, a perfect source for their smoothly blended harmonies and playful stage interaction which has delighted audiences aboard the Zephyr and at a variety of venues and events throughout the Twin Cities.
