Cross Town
Superb pianist, Karen Hernandez is a local treasure for Los Angeles and is beyond compare.  She originally grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah and has been playing the piano since early childhood.  In the late 60’s, late, great pianist Gene Harris convinced Hernandez to come to L.A. and told her she had all the talent necessary to work in the business.  The late, great bassist Andy Simpkins also helped her when she arrived in town.  A lot of good history followed.

Over several years Hernandez has had four CDs released.  ‘Cross Town is quite new and, in my opinion, the best musically.  It swings!  Aided by Lou Shoch on bass and Larry Klein on drums, Hernandez plays with the ultimate soul in all her music.  The first two tunes are “Angel Eyes” and “Back to the Chicken Shack,” showing the range of tunes in the CD.  The trio plays with versatility, making for strong arrangements. There are nine tunes in all, including “You’ve Changed,” “The Breeze and I” and “Tin Tin Deo.” Hernandez has written three originals, including the title track. Her piano playing reflects Harris’ fine influence. The Karen Hernandez trio holds forth at Mr. B’s in Burbank every Thursday night.

This latest CD is getting some good radio air-play, both in L. A. and other cities on jazz stations.  She has recently finished her next CD, titled Life’s Too Short, with bassist John Heard and drummer Lorca Hart. See her website: www.karenhernandezjazz.com .  Her CDs are available on www.CDBaby.com .  Definitely recommended.
