"I found that within my playing that I could play notes, not at first, because at first I couldn't hear these notes, so I wouldn't play them. But as I play more and more I hear more notes to play against the more common chord progressions. And a lot of people say they're wrong. Well, I can't say they're right, and I can't say they're wrong. To my hearing, they're exactly correct". - Eric Dolphy

Las Vegas’s Jazz Station KUNV, 91.5 FM Print E-mail
Written by Glenn A. Mitchell, LA Jazz Scene
Tuesday, 09 October 2007
On a recent trip to Las Vegas we were listening to the radio on FM and lo and behold, there was some great jazz being played!    I decided to write some information here for all the Southern California patrons who visit Las Vegas a time or two each year.  This fine station has straight ahead jazz 24-hours a day, during the week (Mon-Fri).  On weekends they play a little more of an eclectic mix of Latin Jazz, Smooth Jazz, some Reggae, Blues, Folk and Hawaiian.  They have hooked up with NPR (National Public Radio) and present a couple of special shows such as Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Jazzset and Marion McPartland’s Piano Jazz.  They carry some other sophisticated jazz shows like Listen Here, Jazz on the Side, Jazz at Lincoln Center along with Bob Parlocha’s show after 10 pm weekdays.

When any of us are in Las Vegas we’re never without some straight-ahead jazz.  They have been in operation since 1981, celebrating their 25th anniversary last year.  Their website is: www.KUNV.org
