Larry Carlton & Robben Ford, two legendary guitarists on one stage at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 12 at Joe's Bar in Chicago. This unique pairing of two all-time great guitar legends is a guitar player’s dream and promises to deliver an unforgettable evening of dueling solos and a repertoire of blues & jazz played with precision and style. Larry Carlton and Robben Ford have completed a CD from live shows in Tokyo recorded in 2006. It is an incredible crowd-pleasing blend of rock, blues and jazz. This is the first leg of the US Tour is starting in August 2007. They have already been touring in Asia, Europe and Australia, and the shows are just getting hotter.
Larry Carlton is an American jazz guitarist, dividing his recording time between solo recordings and session appearances with more popular bands. Over his career Carlton has won three Grammys for his performances and compositions, including the theme song for the hit television series, Hill Street Blues (1981). It is Carlton's creative and musical blend of jazz and rock elements that have made him such an accessable and popular artist.
Appreciated by smooth jazz fans for his subtle, velvety style, and also by jazz and blues guitarists for his tight phrasing and impressive technique, Larry Carlton started learning to play guitar when he was six years old. Taking an interest in jazz whilst at high school, his playing style was most influenced by guitarists Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, and B.B. King. Saxophonist John Coltrane has also made a notable impression on Carlton, and Carlton's live albums have featured cuts from Miles Davis's hallmark Kind of Blue.
Robben Ford career spans over four decades as well. Ford is one of the premiere electric guitarists today, particularly known for his blues playing as well as his ability to be comfortable in a variety of musical contexts. A four-time Grammy nominee, he has played with artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, Claus Ogerman, Michael McDonald, and many, many others. He is a founding member of the Yellowjackets and Blue Line.
