"In my world, the first thing I reach for is the sound. Technique is Ok, but if you got the technique and I got a good sound, I'll beat you every time. You can play a thousand notes and I can play one note and wipe you out. What I reach for is ... a sound." -Dewey Redman

ImageJazz vocalist Judy Wexler will perform three club dates in the last two weekends in July. Judy will perform on Saturday, July 21st from 7 pm-11 pm at  Maggiano's at the Grove, 189 The Grove Dr. in Los Angeles; on Saturday, July 28th from  8:30 pm-12:30 am at  The Millennium Biltmore, 506 S. Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles; and on Sunday, July 29th from 6:30 pm-9:30 pm at Spaghettini Italian Grill & Jazz Club, 3005 Old Ranch Parkway in Seal Beach.

Judy,  known for her warm voice and nuanced approach to melody and lyrics, is a natural storyteller. Her debut CD, entitled Easy on the Heart, was released on Rhombus Records in 2005. With arrangements by piano great, Alan Pasqua, it features an eclectic mix of standards, pop tunes, and lesser-known songs deserving greater recognition. Easy on the Heart received critical acclaim and remained in the top 50 in national radio airplay (JazzWeek Chart) for six weeks. Click here for a sample of Judy sining "Down Here on the Ground".

Judy has played at most of the top jazz venues in Los Angeles, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Friday Night Jazz Series, Spazio, Steamer's, the Jazz Bakery, and The Biltmore, in addition to gigs in New York's historic Triad Theater and the ASCAP-sponsored Music Cafe at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. She enjoys working with great musicians such as Tom Garvin, Karen Hammack, Tamir Hendelman, Bob Sheppard, and so many more. Image

Judy began studying piano when she was just five, and ever since has been pursuing her love of music.  Judy began studying at the Dick Grove School of Music, where she focused on jazz piano and harmony. She quit acting and continued studying jazz with pianist, Terry Trotter, and vocalists, Sue Raney and Cathy Segal-Garcia. "After awhile, I figured I would be a hundred years old before I was as good as I wanted to be to accompany myself on piano, so I focused only on singing," comments Judy. She soon launched her own singing career in clubs around southern California.

Although a long-time resident of Los Angeles, she performed in clubs and cabarets in San Francisco, and starred in musical theater productions that won the Bay Area Theater Critics Award and the Cabaret Gold Award. She co-founded a theater group (Caught in the Act: A Theater Collective of Four Short Women), and also acted in numerous plays. Ms. Wexler, who studied jazz piano for several years with acclaimed pianist Terry Trotter, and acting with Stella Adler, has appeared as a guest star on television shows including Frasier, Divorce Court, Golden Girls, and New Adam 12.
