San Francisco's Intersection for the Arts' Jazz At Intersection series continues on Tuesday July 10 at 8 PM with the Sarah Wilson Quintet. Sarah Wilson's music has consistently attracted some of the greatest players in the New York jazz scene. Her 2006 CD, Music For An Imaginary Play, released on Evander Music, features Sarah on trumpet and vocals, co-producer Steve Cardenas (Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Joey Baron, Slide Hampton) on electric guitar, Peck Allmond (M'Shell N'Degeocello, Don Cherry, Oliver Lake) on tenor sax, Jerome Harris (Sonny Rollins, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell) on bass, and Kenny Wollesen (Norah Jones, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Tom Waits) on drums. The mission of Jazz At Intersection is to create a place where jazz is the priority, where we are able to promote dialogue about the art form, where we explore the jazz language with our community, and where emerging and experienced composers are encouraged to experiment with new forms. This is our 91st Jazz At Intersection performance since the series' inception in 1999. There is a sliding scale admission of $12-$20.

Known for her work as the musical director and composer of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival's annual giant puppet spectacle, Sarah Wilson also worked as a musical director and company member of Bread and Puppet Theater for many years. Additionally, she composed music for the American Museum of Natural History's Body Art exhibit. Wilson works intensively as a composer and trumpeter with numerous bands led by Kenny Wollesen. Her compositions for Wollesen's projects have been performed at numerous NYC festivals including the 2006 River to River Festival and Celebrate Brooklyn in 2005. Her own quintet has performed at the renowned Festival of New Trumpet Music, Songwriter's Beat 2005 Festival at Cornelia St. Cafe, Lincoln Center for the Arts, Makor and other numerous venues around the New York and CA areas.

Wilson has studied with John McNeil, Laurie Frink, and Paul Caputo; received Meet the Composer grants annually from 1995-2002; was awarded funding from the McCord Foundation and the Irene Diamond Scholarship from 2003-2005; and has toured extensively in the Americas and abroad. As a trumpeter, she has performed with Butch Morris and Myra Melford and recorded with Kenny Wollesen, Atlantic Records artists Dusty Trails and other NYC bands. Born in San Francisco, Wilson grew up in Healdsburg, CA. She received a BA in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. After living for 12 years in New York City, she returned to the Bay Area where she currently resides.

Composer, trumpeter, and vocalist Sarah Wilson's compositions reflect a deep understanding of the connection between images and motion, and evoke theatrical worlds. Having lived and performed in New York City for a dozen years (as well as serving as the musical director and composer of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival's annual giant puppet spectacle), Wilson recently returned to the Bay Area. She composes energetic, idiosyncratic, and complex music that sounds naturally fluid and integrated, and performs at Jazz At Intersection with an all-star ensemble of Bay Area musicians.

In 1999 Intersection for the Arts introduced Jazz At Intersection, a monthly series committed to cultivating and presenting Bay Area jazz composers and musicians in an intimate concert-style setting. Our intention was to create a place where jazz is the priority, where we promote dialogue about the art form, where we explore the jazz language with our community, and where emerging and experienced composers are encouraged to experiment with new forms. To date, we have produced over 90 performances featuring more than 240 musicians including Rova Saxophone Quartet, Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Wayne Wallace Septet, and Miya Masaoka. As venerable jazz critic Phil Elwood has stated, "The feeling of community, togetherness, surrounds the place even before the music starts. At Intersection, the ambience is unequalled - the whole place is part of the performance."

Intersection for the Arts is San Francisco's oldest alternative art space and presents challenging new works in literature, theatre, visual and interdisciplinary arts. Intersection is an art space where experimentation and risk are still possible, where debate and critical inquiry are embraced, and where issues are thrashed about in the heat and immediacy of live art. www.theintersection.org
