Jason Steele Ensemble: Some Wonderful Moment
The adventurous guitarist Jason Steele and his ensemble will perform at the Fountain Square Art Festival in Evanston on June 24th from 1pm-2:30pm. The ensemble will include James Davis (trumpet), Charles Gorczynski (alto sax), Tyler Beach (guitar), Patrick Mulcahy (bass), Charles Rumback (drums), and Jason Steele (guitar/compositions).

The Jason Steele Ensemble released their first recording this year, Some Wonderful Moment on ears&eyes Records with special guests Ron Miles on cornet, saxophonist Josh Sclar, and keyboardist Keith Johnson. This original and engaging CD features six compositions by Steele, one tune by the renowned Colorado trumpeter Ron Miles, and the song "Alphabet Town" by singer/songwriter Elliott Smith. Like manic depression, the mood of this CD runs from brooding to exhilaration, from film noir to science fiction. The intertwining melodies and explorations of these fine musicians weave a delightfully dense tapestry of sound.

Jason Steele
Originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jason has been playing the guitar for over 15 years. He earned his B.M. in Jazz Composition from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Previously, he attended Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas under the tutelage of trumpeter/educator Bryce Luty and drummer Eugene “Bones” Hutchinson. He was recognized for his outstanding work by being selected as a member of the 1997 International Association of Jazz Educators’ All-Star Community College Big Band and performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival as well as at the New Orleans, Reno, and Wichita Jazz Fests. He has also studied with legendary guitarist and composer Dale Bruning, former teacher to Bill Frisell.

Upon arriving in Chicago, Jason studied with guitarists John McLean, David Bloom of the Bloom School of Jazz, Tom Garling, Mike Smith, Eddie Baker, and trumpeter Tito Carillo. He soon began composing for large and small ensembles, finishing his university studies with an arrangement of his original work, “Unexpected You,” for an eighteen piece jazz orchestra.

Some Wonderful Moment represents the culmination of these incredible musical relationships and collaborations and is already receiving positive attention in the jazz world as evidenced by recent reviews in Jazz Chicago and eJazzNews.
