"I know from listening and working with him [Coltrane], that he is, he plays SO much, and he has, a big, as we say, a bag, not a bag of tricks, but a bag of ideas that he has" - Eric Dolphy

The Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club is located in the lobby of the Deauville Beach Resort at 6701 Collins Avenue. Named after the famed Cuban trumpeter, this elegant place to hear jazz has just celebrated its first anniversary.

Reminiscent of the glamorous nightclubs of the 40s and 50s the rectangular room has a capacity (bar and tables) for 131 patrons. Just inside the etched glass doors, is a trophy case containing Sandoval’s Grammy Awards and the right wall featuring many black and white photographs of the trumpeter with various friends and colleagues. The tables in the center of the room are laid out lengthwise while the rest of the room has tables of various sizes and configurations. There isn’t a bad sightline in the room. The dimly lit room has a bar along the left wall and mirrored columns selectively placed. The stage on the back wall has room for a quintet and prominently displays a Bosendorfer grand piano. A screen behind the bar and on the stage plays jazz concert footage and videos in between sets so the music is ever present.

ImageThere is a cover charge ranging from $15 to $40, depending on the artist, and a food and/or drink minimum of $15. The club has a full menu offering a nice variety of seafood and fish dishes among other choices and dishes that have a Cuban touch. Dinner prices are fairly reasonable for a club of this sort. This non-smoking venue has a “quiet” policy and management does its best to keep the serving noise down during performances. There are two shows per night.

During its first year of operation, the club has featured a variety of vocal and instrumental performers including Branford Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jane Monheit, Josh Redmond, Pat Martino, the Lenore Raphael Trio, Diane Schurr among others. And one never knows when Arturo Sandoval will show up to sit in with whoever is performing. The acoustics in the room are first-rate and beautifully accommodate the variety of artists that appear in the room.

The Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club is a welcome addition to the revitalized Miami Beach scene and is a class act whose mission is to keep the music alive.
