"She is a true musician, which any great artist whose medium happens to be music, should be classified as. ... Chris McNulty is an exquisite instrument, along the lines of a Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald". -Gary Bartz Chris McNulty Austrailian born singer, Chris McNulty will perform with virtuoso jazz guitarist, Paul Bollenback at the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay on Sunday, April 22nd. The show will start promptly at 4:30 pm, doors at 3:00 pm. On recordings and in live performance, Chris McNulty spontaneously reconstructs melodies while retaining the essence of the original lyrics. Her repertoire ranges from classic Gershwin and Porter standards to Miles Davis classics and Burt Bacharach chestnuts with an ever increasing focus on her original compositions and lyrics."I don’t want musicians playing it too safe but on the other hand I also need someone who has a well developed sense of space – some of it has to do with getting used to each others’ styles – where he/she hears it, time-wise. In the end it’s really about a good match. Paul Bollenback and myself do a lot of duet work together in many and varied settings. You can hear how naturally locked in we are after about two bars." - Chris McNulty in a JazzImprov Magazine interview, December 2006
Increasingly acknowledged by musicians, peers and critics alike as a jazz vocalist-composer with a unique vision, boundless creative energy and a distinctive style of her own. McNulty's risk-taking, fluid and powerful emotional approach, support, but never compromise her musical sensibilities. As both vocalist and composer, McNulty breaks new ground by simultaneously reinforcing and re-defining the boundaries for jazz vocals. In short, she is a consummate musician with great pitch and control "capable of injecting emotion, pathos, irony & meaning into her work, a gift that few singers can lay claim to.” (George Carroll, The Musicians Ombudsman, Aug 2006). Her compositions have been hailed as rich harmonically, melodically and lyrically and well worthy of the company they keep along side the great standards she continues to interpret and explore.
"Not one jazz virtuoso could put the definition of jazz into words, but all agreed that you know it when you hear it. That's the way it is with Paul Bollenback. It's bona-fide playing, unambiguous, up-front and powerful," -George Benson
