 David Berkman David Berkman is one of the most original and engaging pianist/composers working today. Music lovers will have three oppertunities to hear the David Berkman Quartet in two different conexts, first in the intimate jazz club environment of the Green Mill and then in the more reserved setting of a concert hall at Chicago Cultural Center's Cassidy Theater. The David Berkman Quartet features David Berkman, piano; Dick Oatts, alto sax; Ed Howard, bass; and Ted Poor, drums.As part of the New Millennium / New Music series the Dave Berkman Quartet will perform on Monday, April 30, 7 pm the Chicago Cultural Center, Cassidy Theater - 77 E. Since moving to New York in 1985, David Berkman has been an important part of the jazz community. He is an award-winning composer/bandleader (2000 Doris Duke/Chamber Music America New Works Creation and Presentation Grant), a recording artist whose 4 Palmetto recordings have appeared on numerous best records of the year critic's lists (the New York Times, the Village Voice, Downbeat, JazzIz, Jazz Times and others) and an award-winning jazz clinician who has performed and taught at numerous jazz camps, universities and conservatories around the United States, South America and Europe. Berkman has played in countless bands including those of Cecil McBee, Tom Harrell and the Vanguard Orchestra and has performed with and/or recorded and/or arranged for numerous jazz luminaries, including: Sonny Stitt,, Brian Blade, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Ray Drummond, Billy Hart, Dick Oatts, Tony Malaby, Chris Potter, Scott Wendholt, Lenny White, Scott Colley, Craig Handy, Steven Bernstein, Bill Stewart, Dave Stryker, Fathead Newman, Hank Crawford, and Jane Monheit.  David Berkman Now appearing more and more often as a bandleader, David Berkman has performed solo and with his quartet, quintet and sextet at festivals and clubs in the United States, Europe and Japan, most recently at the North Sea Festival, the Edinburgh festival, the Belfast festival and the Cork Festival. Recent tours include: clubs and concert performances in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Sao Paulo, Japan and around the United States. Recent projects include piano/trumpet duo performances with Dave Douglas (2005 International Trumpet Guild Convention in Bangkok) and Tom Harrell (around Italy). As a Jazz Clinician, David Berkman offers workshops and master classes in a variety of subjects including: jazz composition, improvisation, small group dynamics and improvisation for large ensembles emphasizing ways to utilize open (free) improvisational techniques to explore, develop and improve student's playing skills (for any style). Berkman is a member of the faculty of the North Netherlands Conservatory in Groningen, Holland. As a solo artist, or leading groups of musician/clinicians ranging in size from duo to quintet, David Berkman has appeared as an artist-in-residence at many colleges, universities and festivals.
 Dick Oatts Born and raised in the state of Iowa, Dick Oatts decided to move to New York City in 1977. He then became a member if the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra. Since then he has recorded and toured with small groups such as Red Rodney, Eddie Gomez, Vic Juric, Bob Brookmeyer, Mel Lewis, Dom Salvador, Jerry Bergonzi, Flim & the BB's, Fred Hersch, Dave Berkman, Terell Stafford, Jon Faddis, Lalo Schiffrin, and Ray Mantilla. For 30 years, Mr. Oatts has appeared at college jazz festivals as a soloist and clinician throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada, South America, and the Middle East. Oatts has been on the Manhattan School of Music Faculty since 1989 and an artist-in-residence at the Amsterdam Conservatory since 1997. Ed Howard Ted Poor graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 2003 where he earned his BM in Jazz Performance and taught on the faculty of the Community Education Division. While at Eastman, Ted studied drum set Rich Thompson and percussion with John Beck. Now a resident of New York City, Ted performs and records a variety of music with many different ensembles. For the past 2 years he has worked with guitarist Ben Monder's Quartet and played on Monder's most recent CD to be released later in 2005 (featuring Kermit Driscoll, Skuli Sverrison and Theo Bleckman). Ted is also a member of trumpeter Cuong Vu's trio (with bassist Stomu Takeishi), with whom Ted tours Europe and the US. Recently, the trio joined with guitarist Bill Frissell to make a record of Vu's music entitled It's Nostly Residual, which was released in the fall of 2005.
 Ted Poor Born and raised in Washington D.C., Ed Howard now lives in New York City and is a highly sought after bassist. Staring in 1982, Ed has had the opportunity to tour extensively and record three CD's with the Roy Haynes Quartet. Howard also performed with with Gary Thomas' Group, 7th Quadrant, whose rap/hip hop inspired work is rhythmically and harmonically demanding. Ed recorded two CD's with he great trumpet player, Dr. Eddie Henderson, the most recent of which is Manhattan In Blue, winner of Swing Journal's Gold Disc Award. Howard attended Federal City College in Washington D.C. and studied with bassist Marshall Hawkins. In 1981 Ed was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Award, enabling him to study with master bassist Buster Williams.
