Kristin Kord © Andrea Canter The Bass duo of Kristin Korb with Todd Johnson will appear at Galli's on Sunday, April 22nd at 7:00 PM. The double bass (also known as the contrabass, string bass, bass fiddle or just bass) is rarely featured in a duo setting, it is even rare for a jazz band of any size have more than one. So this combination is a rare treat, paring the swinging upright bass and vocals of Kristin Korb with Todd Johnson on the six string electric bass which, in the hands of a master like Johnson, provides a extended range and the ability to play chord changes and bass lines simultaneously.
There are few bass players who sing as they perform but Kristin Korb in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and plays the bass with the authority and swing of the great Ray Brown. With these and many other strong influences, Kristin Korb has created a style and presence all her own.
Kristin Korb was born and raised in Montana, where she grew up in a musical family and often presented concerts with her three younger brothers. Her passion for music eventually led to a bachelor's degree in music education from Eastern Montana College. In 1992, she moved to San Diego to hone her bass skills with bass professor Bertram Turetzky, earned a master's degree from the University of California (San Diego), and became one of the busiest bassists in San Diego. Kristin just finished her stint as Director of Jazz Studies at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, where she performed with the faculty jazz ensemble, taught bass, jazz history and directed their premier large jazz ensemble, Jazz Band 1. She has now relocated to focus on her performing career based out of Los Angeles, California.
Kristin tours nationally as both an artist and educator. Recent performances/clinics include a presentation at the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) Conference, a tour of Japan, the 2001 Brandon Jazz Festival (Canada), and the Paradise Valley and West Coast Jazz Parties. She has been featured at the International Society of Bassists Conference (in 1999 and 2001) and has recently been appointed to their Board of Directors.
In addition to Ray Brown and Benny Green, Kristin has appeared with such artists as Clark Terry, Bill Mays, Bobby Shew, Jeff Hamilton, Harry Allen, Carl Allen, Joe LaBarbera, Tamir Hendelman, and Mike Wofford. She is now the leader of her own ensemble. See www.myspace.com/kristinkorb
Todd Johnson Todd Johnson is recognized as a pioneer of the six-string bass. With his Zon signature model six-string bass, Johnson uses an innovative technique where he plays chord changes and bass lines simultaneously, giving him an uniquely rich and fuller sound that proves extremely useful in both solo and small combo work.
A long-time member of the Ron Escheté Trio, Todd can be seen frequently in the Southern California area with Ron’s trio, the Kristin Korb/Todd Johnson Trio, and as a solo act. Johnson has performed and recorded with other artists, including Kristin Korb, Mike Stern, Jim Martinez, Dave Weckl, Scott Henderson, Barbara Morrison, Plas Johnson, Sam Most, Lew Tabackin, Jack Sheldon, Dewey Erney, Joe LaBarbera, Frank Potenza, Larry Koonse, Kendall Kay, Steve & Jennifer Barnes, Kate Reid, Tierney Sutton, Poncho Sanchez, Mundell Lowe, Paul Humphrey, and Frank Gambale.
Though Johnson dedicates himself largely to performing and recording, he also teaches courses and workshops in a variety of settings.
