Jimmy Heath, one of the world's most renowned saxophonists and composers, joins The Chicago Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Jon Faddis, in concert at The Black Orchid Supper Club, 230 W. North Avenue in Old Town, on Thursday, April 12, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the show are $35 and can be purchased at 312-344-6600.
Heath, the middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers, has performed with nearly all of the jazz greats of the last 50 years, including Howard McGhee, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Jon Faddis. He has performed on more than 100 records and has written more than 140 compositions, which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Clark Terry, James Moody, Ahmad Jamal, Dexter Gordon, Ray Charles and numerous others. Heath's most recent release with The Jimmy Heath Big Band, "Turn Up the Heath" (Planet Arts Recordings), continues to receive rave reviews. A brilliant musician, composer, arranger and educator, he taught for more than a decade at the Aaron Copland School of Music at New York's Queens College and continues to present master classes around the world.

The Chicago Jazz Ensemble was founded in 1965 by the late jazz composer William Russo as a professional jazz orchestra in residence at Columbia College Chicago. The 20-piece orchestra is comprised of Chicago's jazz elite and its repertoire is derived from the early works of Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, King Oliver, and Jelly Roll Morton, as well as other jazz greats that forged the American jazz heritage.
The CJE's American Heritage Series is the third series with Artistic Director trumpet virtuoso, Jon Faddis. Faddis draws on over thirty years experience in performing with and conducting superb Jazz big bands such as Lionel Hampton's big band and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). Faddis served as music director for Dizzy Gillespie's GrammyTM-award winning United Nation's Orchestra, for Dizzy Gillespie's 70th Birthday Big Band, and, after his mentor's passing, Faddis led the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars Big Band. Renowned for his leadership of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Faddis conducted over 40 concerts in ten years at Carnegie Hall, featuring over 135 musicians and 70 guest artists.
