Now in its 32nd year, the New Black Eagle Jazz Band plays traditional jazz. This style, as performed by the Black Eagles, covers a wide range from the early New Orleans style; Chicago of the 1920's; 1930's small band jazz; the revival of the 1940's and 1950's; and original pieces written by a number of band members. Their repertoire of over 600 numbers includes Rags by such as Scott Joplin, arranged for the band; spirituals and gospel music; old pop tunes from the start of the 20th century to the 1960's and blues. They have vocalists with a broad repertoire whose vocals are always well received by audiences. This will be the band’s second appearance at the Capital City Jazz Fest.
Formed as a recording band, Bob Schulz's Frisco Jazz Band has evolved into one of the country’s premiere traditional jazz bands. The band is patterned after the late great Bob Scobey Frisco Band of the 1950s and 1960s and performs all jazz styles, being influenced by jazz greats, both past and present. The sidemen who play with Wisconsin native, Schulz, are some of the finest traditional jazz musicians in the country, You can expect to hear a vast array of selections ranging from Muggsy to Murphy to Condon, all played with the personal touch of the Frisco Jazz Band...much the way the free-spirited Scobey would have done.
Reuben Ristrom’s several decades of experience include night clubs, jazz festivals, concerts, shows, recording sessions, strolling ensembles, solo guitar or banjo, wedding music, jazz funerals, leading sing-alongs and more. His styles include: Dixieland, mainstream jazz, swing, standards, Latin, as well as rock 'n' roll. He has worked concerts, shows and jazz festivals throughout the continental US and Hawaii , gigging with the best local musicians and many national “name” artists. Appearing with Reuben will be three top notch musicians: Dale Mendenhall on reeds, Tom Lewis on bass and Jay Epstein on drums.
Widely known for his 12-year stint as house pianist and band leader on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion, Butch Thompson is known around the world as a traditional New Orleans jazz master, a pianist whose command of the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Scott Joplin and other giants of the field is unsurpassed. As one critic said, “Butch Thompson’s remarkable performance transports us, not to a precious museum exhibit, but right to the core of an evolving tradition.” Butch plays the best of the early jazz piano repertoire, music by Morton, Joplin, Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, Willie “the Lion” Smith, Bix Beiderbecke and others. He also plays blues and pop tunes of the classic jazz era and his own idiomatic compositions. Butch will perform at each fest session playing solo numbers. Members of the other fest bands will join him, reprising his world famous trios.
