Mulligan Stew
The Twin Cities Jazz Society has released a CD titled "MULLIGAN STEW, COOKIN' at the Hot Summer Jazz Festival", thanks to the generosity of some Jazz Friends of TCJS. In November of 2003, Saxophonist Dave Karr put together a group to recreate the Gerry Mulligan Quartet sound at a Jazz From J to Z concert at the Artists' Quarter. A snowstorm occurred and only 30 hardy souls showed up. The music was outstanding!, so we promised Dave an encore, and the TCJS sponsored them at the 2004 Hot Summer Jazz Festival, in downtown Minneapolis. The music was fantastic and it was recorded! The CD features some of the Twin Cities finest, all world class musicians; Dave Karr - baritone sax, Dave Graf - trombone (he also wrote the incredible liner notes), Phil Hey - drums, Gordy Johnson - bass, and the young Tanner Taylor - piano.

The Press:

"Mulligan Stew comes surprisingly close to capturing the instrumental quality and emotional insouciance of Mulligan's famed quartet. The material on the live concert disk...is classic Mulligan, including "Jeru," "Bernie's Tune," "Walkin' Shows," and a superb rendition of "Line For Lyons." The sound quality is excellent throughout--although not as fine as hearing them in the flesh." --Britt Robson, City Pages

"After half a century, reed master Dave Karr finally has an album as leader, thanks to the Twin Cities Jazz Society, which sponsored his "Mulligan Stew" tribute to baritone sax king Gerry Mulligan. He's rightly proud of this long overdue showcase for his biggest horn." --Tom Surowicz, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"This Stew really is quite delicious, nearly as appetizing as the recipe from which it is taken, the groundbreaking Gerry Mulligan quartets of the '50s and '60s.

"Indeed, this new version of the Mulligan ensemble even has something Gerry’s groups didn’t—a pianist, Tanner Taylor, who makes it a quintet. Much as I admired the classic Mulligan collaborations with Chet Baker and Bob Brookmeyer, I must be among the few who always wished he’d used a piano (Mulligan and Brookmeyer did mine the keyboard on occasion). The talented Taylor contributes a lot to the convivial session, both as soloist and accompanist.

"Baritone Dave Karr and trombonist Dave Graf are splendid surrogates for Mulligan and Brookmeyer....There's a lot of Mulligan in Karr's dark, agile bari, and Graf, even though playing slide trombone instead of valve, invokes the spirit if not the style of Brookmeyer.

"As for the music, one couldn’t have asked for a more agreeable selection of Mulligan classics.

"Mulligan Stew is hot and savory but by no means overcooked. Would I recommend that you tuck on a bib and sample an earful or two? Be my guest." --Jack Bowers, All About Jazz
