Nichola Miller: Live at the Dakota
Minnesota native Nichola Miller had been living in New York for the past few years but it never felt like home. A night at the Times last winter must have ignited a return to her roots, as Nichola relocated to the Twin Cities this spring. And she wasted no time getting back into the local jazz scene. In the next few weeks, Nichola will be appearing at the Times Bar and Café (August 25th), Bryant Lake Bowl (September 6th) and later at the Dakota (October 3rd). A truly unique voice among jazz singers, her rich vocal qualities go down as smooth and easy as her attendant Cosmopolitan. And as the local dance community knows, Nichola can swing you into bad health, to boot.

After fifteen years in the Twin Cities, and her 2004 CD, Live at the Dakota, Nichola figured it was time to check out the Big Apple. But it wasn’t an easy transition. “NY's tough,” she says, “not so generous to its musicians. Am sick of waiting tables—would rather sing… I miss Minnesota madly—nice people, easy living, fresh air…” It was just natural that Nichola booked her first gigs after her homecoming at the Times. She’s been a favorite of the longtime house band at the Times, the 15-year residents also known as the Wolverines Trio (a microcosm of the 34-year-old Wolverines Big Band).

At the Times on Saturday night (August 25th), Nichola will be on the bandstand with a monster trio led by pianist Tanner Taylor, along with bassist Gordy Johnson and drummer Phil Hey. The gig at the Bryant Lake Bowl-- part of Bossa's cabaret show (September 6th) will also feature the now-frequent collaboration of Nichola and Tanner, who have been working together in the studio as well, putting together a new recording--so this is a good opportunity for a preview!

Whether you are already familiar with this swinging singer, or if you have yet to be seduced by her charms, you’ll want to mark your calendars now!

The Times Bar and Café is located at 201 E. Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis, just north of downtown. For reservations, call 612-617-8098; www.timesbarandcafe.com. The Bryant Lake Bowl cabaret show on September 6th, 10 pm, takes place at Bryant Av and Lake Street in south Minneapollis. Watch the Dakota Jazz Club calendar for Nichola's October 3rd gig--www.dakotacooks.com. More on Nichola Miller and music samples at http://www.myspace.com/nicholamillerjazz
