A benefit to raise funds for the people of Darfur in the Sudan will be held March 10th at the Dashen Ethiopian Restaurant in Minneapolis. “Expect the Unexpected” features “spontaneous music” from Twin Cities artists, including Dallas Johnson (with Serge Akou, Brian Zimniak, and Ray Rivera), Innocent, Joe Shalita, Siama Matuzungidi, Ras Kwami, Jocko MacNally, Van Nixon, Wanaku Komtanghi and other special guests. The intimate setting of this small southside restaurant provides a unique opportunity to enjoy this eclectic lineup of globally influenced musicians, while raising funds and awareness to address the plight of this West African region, home to eight million people, many of whom are dependent on international aid for their survival. The money raised at Expect the Unexpected will be sent to the International Rescue Committee (www.ircblog.org), to be distributed to the people of Darfur for education, training for adults leading to self-sufficiency, clean water programs, women’s programs, and more.

Notes event organizer and vocalist Dallas Johnson, “The answer to conflict lies in individual relationships and this event is a model. While enjoying Ethiopian food and conversing with someone from Prague, you’ll hear a kalimba being played to a classic soul tune. Ever heard a soukous song morph into dancehall, then to bebop? Or Afro beat to funk and spoken word? Music has the power to bring people together to create something new…to celebrate our uniqueness and our commonality. People doubt there can ever be an end to war. People doubt their ability to make a difference. But when each of us does something, together we can move mountains. Expect the Unexpected.”
