Rodrigo Ferrari Nunes A solid introduction to 29-year-old composer, producer, bass player, and anthropologist Rodrigo Ferrari Nunes, the Bias Project #1 is a Brazilian tribute to great composers and improvisers of the jazz past such as Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans.
Two original tracks are by contemporary Brazilian composers Hermeto Pascoal and Sandro Haick. These compositions were chosen by Nunes with the purpose of revealing his current and future direction musically in an ever evolving process. Since this is a one-time-only project meant to link the common multicultural roots, Nunes carefully chose the players to participate in this celebration. The principal criteria behind Rodrigo's plan (stated in the press release) in making this production was a strong desire to help expose to a larger audience the musical richness of the Săo Paulo instrumental scene, the possession of rhythmic and melodic inventiveness by the players, personality and original uniqueness instead of mimicry. Ease and effortlessness soloing over and navigating advanced chord changes. The result is an energetic and highly electrifying experience through well known standards.
Rodrigo Ferrari Nunes Bias Project #1 For this brilliant piece of work Ferrari Nunes has gathered amazing players that eloquently give justice to these compositional greats. Saxophonist, Vinicius Dorin (member of the Hermeto Pascoal group), manifold-instrumentalist Sandro Haick (considered one of the greatest improvisers in Brazil); trumpeter Daniel D’Alcântara, pianist Pepe Rodriguez and eclectic drummer Cuca Teixeira.
Bias Project #1 begins with a buoyant take on “Fables of Faubus” the group’s ability to create inventive interaction with solid chemistry is highly apparent on this first track. Just when you thought it could not get any better we move onto “Giant Steps,” certainly a composition filled with intricacies and beauty. Nunes and crew are certainly up for the task with great technique and fire, the group fills the cut with soul-felt exuberating spirit.
On “Mr. P.C." tenor Vinicius Dorin connects streams of liberated consciousness that ungulate above the grooving minor color in a 12 bar form. On “Donna Lee” Ferrari Nunes, with amazing finger dexterity clearly and cohesively runs through the vertical harmonic palette while spinning melodic surprises that will surly get you in a get-up-and -go attitude. Sandro Haick floats throughout each track with significant skills and competent rhythm displaying powerful and dynamic choices.
Rodrigo Ferrari Nunes has exhibited and truly masterful debut release with high level musicianship and inventive takes on time honored standards. This is not mimicry but a new take on well covered material, showing his ability to interpret the masters in a new era. Well worth addition to your collection of jazz releases. |
