Surely one of the top jazz bands in the Midwest, the JazzMN Big Band welcomes saxophonist Tom Peterson, along with cousin Patty and Aunt Jeanne Arland Peterson, on February 3rd at the Hopkins High School Performing Arts Center. Formed in 1998 to “promote, preserve and perpetuate jazz, America's indigenous art music, through performance, historical preservation, and education," the non-profit JazzMN Big Band is an amalgam of the best jazz artists in the Twin Cities. Over its seven seasons, the band has presented a who’s who list of guest artists, including Arturo Sandoval, Phil Woods, James Moody, Dave Weckl, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco, Peter Erskine, Ryan Kisor and more. The band released its first self-titled CD on the Artegra label in 2000. Under the leadership of Dr. Doug Snapp, the JazzMN Big Band inaugurated its 2006-07 season with bandleader Gordon Goodwin in November.

The February 3rd program will start off with the JazzMN Big Band’s renditions of Buddy Greco's “Rotten Kid,” David Raksin's “Laura” (arranged by Bob Florence); and Bill Holman’s “Malaga.” Holman will be the featured guest artist when the Big Band closes its season in March. Patty Peterson will join the band to sing Webster and Burke’s “Black Coffee” and the Rogers and Hart classic, “This Can't Be Love.”

The second half of the program features Tom Peterson on Cole Porter's “Begin The Beguine,” Victor Young's “Beautiful Love,” along with “Soundsketch.” Family matriarch and pianist Jeanne Arland Peterson will be featured on “Give Me the Simple Life,” and Patty Peterson returns in a medley, “We'll Be Together Again.” The JazzMN Big Band close out the show with Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-a-ning.”
