Roger Friedman, Eddie Henderson, Greg Bandy, David Certain The Eddie Henderson - Greg Bandy Quartet will be performing January
23rd at The Mint in Los Angeles, CA.
with his newly formed quartet with twice Grammy-nominated drummer Greg
Bandy, pianist, Roger
Friedman and bassist David Certain. Other California dates for the
quartet include Thursday, January 25th
at the Cotton Club West in Long Beach California and January 26th and
27th on The World Stage in Los
Angeles.
The Eddie Henderson – Greg Bandy Quartet currently includes
legendary trumpeter Eddie Henderson,
pianist and synthesist Roger Friedman, bassist David Certain and
drummer Greg Bandy. The group
started before the turn of the century in 1999 as the Greg Bandy Trio.
In 2004, Mr. Bandy moved
back to New York and reestablished himself in the Harlem, New York and
international scenes. The
group has played with notables such as saxophonist Gary Bartz, seminal
singer Jimmy Scott, flautist
Dave Valentin, trumpeter Terrence Blanchard, saxophonist Mario Rivera
and many others including
Eddie Henderson. David Certain moved to San Francisco in 2004, and
brought to the Bach Society in
Half Moon Bay Bandy's band to back up Gary Bartz and Eddie. Dr.
Henderson and the trio clicked as
he and Greg had played together for many years and he liked the
chemistry of the group as a whole.
The new Eddie Henderson – Greg Bandy Quartet was born playing standards
in swing, Latin and
funk/fusion styles continuing the tradition of Art Blakey, Miles Davis,
Herbie Hancock, Freddie
Hubbard and Lee Morgan. It is a veritable American music variety show
with breadth and depth and a
"fire" that is rarely found today.
 Eddie Henderson
Jazz trumpeter extraordinaire Eddie
Henderson was blessed with knowing many famous musicians
growing up. His stepfather was a doctor to people like Miles and
Coltrane and Duke Ellington. In fact, his first
informal lesson on the instrument at the age of 9 was from Louis
Armstrong.
Eddie Henderson grew up in San Francisco and is one of the few
trumpeters who was strongly
influenced by Miles Davis' work of his early fusion period. Henderson
played with John Handy, Tyrone Washington, and Joe Henderson, and his own group. He gained some recognition for his work with
the Herbie Hancock Sextet from 1970 to 1973. After that Henderson worked with Art Blakey, with
Charles Earland, and later, in the 1970s, led a rock-oriented group. In
the '90s, he returned to playing acoustic hard bop while also working as a physician. Recent releases for
Eddie iinclude
"Oasis" (2001 on Sirocco Jazz Limited label), "So What", a tribute to
Miles Davis (2003, EPC,
Sony, Columbia), "Time and Spaces" (2004 Sirocco Jazz Limited),
"Manhattan Blue" (2005,
unreleased) and "Precious Moment" (2006 on the Kind of Blue label).
 Greg Brady
Greg Bandy was discovered
by Charles Mingus at the of age 20. Greg has played with
prominent jazz artists over the last thirty-plus years: Joe Henderson,
Betty Carter, Pharoh
Sanders, Olu Dara, Curtis Fuller, Jack McDuff, Leon Thomas, Lee Morgan,
Freddie Hubbard,
Stanley Turrentine, George Benson, Yusef Lateef and many others
securing his status as a
living legend. Mr. Bandy's 1997 debut CD "Lightning in a Bottle"
garnered two Grammy
nominations. He produces "Bandy Does Blakey," a tribute to one of his
mentors, the late Art
Blakey, and reunites former members of Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
 Rodger Friedman
Roger Friedman, has been
performing for over 35 years. He started playing the piano by ear
when he was 4 years old. He studied piano with the great be-bop pianist
Ray Santisi and
percussion with Les Lumley. In the 1970's, Roger formed an electric
fusion group with
drummer Steve McCraven (drummer for Archie Shepp and Marion Brown),
bassist Joe Fonda
and the guitarist Michael Gregory and performed in small jazz groups
with musicians such as
Avery Sharpe. Roger moved back to Cleveland to play in groups with
drummer Jamey Haddad
and bassist Kip Reed before joining the Greg bandy Trio. Roger also
records and performs
with the Dave Sterner Quintet as well as with his own duo and trio.
 David Certain
David Certain's innovative
bass style employing swing, funk and Latin elements is inspired by
Buster Williams, Jaco Pastorius, Art Davis and Alex Blake: old school
sees tomorrow. A
bassist for thirty five years, he began his musical education very
young, playing by ear the
beginning piano pieces his mother taught at home to other children.
David has performed
with saxophonist Gary Bartz, organ master Jimmy McGriff, saxophonist
and Grammy-winning
arranger Willie Smith, singer “Little” Jimmy Scott, Vincent Herring,
drummer Larry Hancock,
vocalist Paula West and many other fine musicians. He tours and records
with legendary
Grammy-nominated drummer Greg Bandy who refers to David as his
"tailor-made bass
player.“ David is the "stateside" bassist for piano virtuoso and free
jazz pioneer, Bobby Few.
