Nominations for the 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards were announced today by The Recording Academy. We will provide a jazz overview, followed by a complete list of all 49th Annual GRAMMY Award nominees.

The nominees for best instrumental jazz solo performance are: Roy Haynes for Hippidy Hop (Drum Solo) a track from: Whereas (Recorded live at the Artists' Quarter in St. Paul) [ Click here for a Jazz Police review], Michael Brecker for "Some Skunk Funk", a track from: Some Skunk Funk (Randy Brecker w/Michael Brecker) Paquito D'Rivera for "Paq Man" a track from: From The Heart (Hilario Duran And His Latin Jazz Big Band), Taylor Eigsti for "Freedom Jazz Dance" a track from: Lucky To Be Me, and Branford Marsalis for "Hope" Track from: Braggtown.

Best Jazz Vocal Album nominees are Footprints by Karrin Allyson [ Click here for a Jazz Police review], Easy To Love by Roberta Gambarini, Live At Jazz Standard With Fred Hersch by Nancy King, From This Moment On by Diana Krall and Turned To Blue by Nancy Wilson [Click here for a Jazz Police review].

Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group nominations went to Sound Grammar by Ornette Coleman [Sound Grammar]; The Ultimate Adventure by Chick Corea[Stretch Records]; Trio Beyond — Saudades by Jack DeJohnette, Larry Goldings & John Scofield [ECM]; Beyond The Wall [Nonesuch]; and Sonny, Please by Sonny Rollins [Doxy Records].

The song "Mornin'" by George Benson (& Al Jarreau) won a nomination in the Best Pop Instrumental Performance category (For solo, duo, group or collaborative performances, without vocals. Singles or Tracks only.)

Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical went to The Phat Pack, Marcelo Penell, Dave Sharenow & Tommy Vicari, engineers (Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band). Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category included jazzster Tony Bennett's Duets: An American Classic and Bette Midler Sings The Peggy Lee Songbook. Dan Morgenstern's liner notes for If You Got To Ask, You Ain't Got It!(Fats Waller) were also nominated.
