“‘Swing’ is an adjective or a verb , not a noun. All jazz musicians should swing. There is no such thing as a ’swing band’ in music.” - Artie Shaw

The Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee continues with multi-Grammy Award-winning bassist, producer, and film composer Marcus Miller, Friday, December 8, at 8:15 p.m., at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. Miller and two Berklee student groups he has shaped and rehearsed throughout the preceding week will perform music associated with his extraordinary career.

Acclaimed bassist, composer, producer, band leader, and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller is a true musical renaissance man. Born in Brooklyn in 1959, he was raised in a musical family that included his father (a church organist and choir director) and his cousin, jazz pianist Wynton Kelly. He has over 400 recording credits to his name, a short list of which includes Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Grover Washington Jr., Donald Fagen, Bill Withers, Chaka Khan, Meshell Ndegeocello, and LL Cool J.

Miller has played an integral role in the careers of Miles Davis (for whom he composed and produced the classic album Tutu), Luther Vandross (with whom he won a Grammy for their composition “Power of Love”), David Sanborn and many other legendary artists. Miller’s 2001 solo record M2 won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. He is also a prolific film and TV composer, scoring movies House Party, Boomerang, Siesta, The Ladies Man, and The Brothers as well as Chris Rock’s hit sitcom Everybody Hates Chris.

From December 4 - 8, Miler will be in residency at Berklee giving a series of clinics on bass, music production, arranging, and film scoring (the clinics are not open to the public). Each evening he will rehearse two Berklee ensembles featuring top student vocalists and instrumentalists, who he will perform with December 8. Directing the student ensembles is faculty guitarist David Fiuczynski (The Screaming Headless Torsos, Meshell Ndegeocello, Vernon Reid, Branford Marsalis, others).

The Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee is an exciting eight-concert series, featuring jazz, Latin, rock, r&b, folk and other music styles. Berklee is pleased to welcome Borders as the supporting sponsor of the series. Upcoming concerts will include Sweet Honey in the Rock, a Stevie Wonder tribute, and more.

The Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee presents Marcus Miller, Friday, December 8, at 8:15 p.m., at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. General admission tickets are $25; seniors $18.75. Tickets are available at the Berklee box office or through Ticketmaster at 617-931-2000 or www.ticketmaster.com.
