Kim Nalley
December features local piano legend Larry Vuckovich celebrating his 70th birthday, Friday-Saturday, December 8-10. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has already declared Friday night, December 8, Larry Vuckovich Day in San Francisco! Vuck will be welcoming an impressive roster of musical guests to help him celebrate. In addition, December brings the elegantly burning guitar of Calvin Keys (Friday-Sunday, December 15-17), the classy Noel Jewkes (Thursday, December 21) and a unique tribute to unsung Bay Area Latin jazz/mambo pioneer Carlos Federico (Friday and Saturday, December 22 & 23).

And for the holidays, Vocalist Russ Lorenson delivers his own unique swinging take on the Christmas standards in his wonderful show, “What I Want for Christmas,” Thursday, December 14. The feisty and fashionable songstress Kim Nalley gives a jazz/blues thrill to New Years Eve at Pearl’s that few performers can match, in the Bay Area or anywhere.

Muziki Roberson
Thursday, December 7, 2006
Muziki Roberson Quartet
Modern Jazz Piano: Muziki Roberson is a gifted, inspired jazz pianist and composer who for the last two decades has thrived in some of the most challenging and creative environments the Bay Area jazz scene has to offer. For years, he was the keyboardist for the brilliant, jazz/funk/Latin/poetry group, Mingus Amungus. And for 12 years, Roberson was keyboard player and music director for the San Francisco Mime Troup. For the first time in several years, Roberson is returning to the foreground as a group leader, fronting a dynamic band featuring saxophonist Dave Ellis, bassist Aaron Germaine, and drummer Babatunde Lea. Larry Vuckovich Celebrates 70!
Happy Birthday to a San Francisco Piano Legend! When San Francisco helps piano great Larry Vuckovich celebrate his 70th birthday over three glorious evenings at Jazz at Pearl’s, we’ll be celebrating the steadily full-speed career of a fabulous musician and a terrific friend. Vuckovich is an effervescent bebop jazz pianist whose performances never lack for style, wit and energy. With his 37-year jazz career on the San Francisco jazz scene (interrupted by productive European and New York sojourns), Larry Vuckovich is a repository of San Francisco jazz history. For the occasion, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome has declared Friday night, December 8, “Larry Vuckovich Day” in San Franisco.

Vuckovich is also celebrating the satisfying success of his recently released CD, Street Scene. This spirited recording is filled with tunes that hearken back to Vuckovich’s first fascination with jazz as a teenager arriving in the U.S. for the first time.

For his celebratory 70th birthday Pearl’s performances, Vuckovich will be joined by longtime collaborators Buca Necak (bass), Akira Tana (drums) and Hector Lugo (Latin percussion). And given the community of friends Vuckovich has gathered on his musical journeys, there's no telling who else might turn up. Vocalist Russ Lorenson: What I Want for Christmas
There's something for everyone in vocalist Russ Lorenson's wonderful holiday show. From the swinging "My Favorite Time Of Year" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas," to the intimate and romantic "Christmas Waltz" and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" to the plain old ragtime fun of "If I Hear Another Song About Christmas," it's great fun listening to these classics, delivered with Lorenson's fresh, invigorating delivery. Lorenson, who grew up with music but left for several years to join the dot.com land rush, returned to singing in 2005. In that brief time, he's made a huge success with his popular stage shows. "A Little Travelin' Music" takes audiences on a musical journey through the great standards of the 20th century, and "Benedetto/Blessed" is Lorenson's tribute to the great Tony Bennett. Calvin Keys
A true lion of blues and jazz guitar
Soul, funk, jazz, virtuosity, depth of experience, lightness of touch and intensity of spirit. Seasoned, yet young at heart. The words we use to describe guitarist Calvin Keys barely seem to scratch the surface of what this great musician has to offer jazz audiences. Keys’ life in jazz and blues reads like a roadmap of 20th century American music history. Keys got early work in Kansas City blues bands, then began a string of tenures with the great organ trios of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes. It's no wonder the blues and funk fly from his fingers as he plays. In the early 70’s, Keys toured Europe with the Ray Charles Big Band. And in 1973, while continuing to record as a leader, Keys began a 7-year run with pianist Ahmad Jamal. For More information visit: http://secure.jazzatpearls.com/talent_page.php?id=271

Noel Jewkes

Noel Jewkes Quartet
A veteran saxman with a sparkling sound
A night with Noel Jewkes is a night of pure, straight-ahead jazz beauty. Jewkes has been at the heart of the San Francisco jazz world for 40 years, and that heart shines through on every note Jewkes plays. Jewkes grew up in Salt Lake City in a musical household. Over the years, Jewkes has performed with just about everyone in the Bay Area. He's recorded with John Hendricks, Wesla Whitfield, Mary Stallings, Lavay Smith, Mimi Fox, and Larry Vuckovich, as well as his own ensembles. He was on the stage at the legendary Fillmore Street nightspot Bob City and took part in the experimental whirlwind of the late-60's San Francisco rock scene.

Carlos Federico Memorial Sextet
Tribute to A Mambo King!
This two-night affair will be a CD release party for The Carlos Federico Memorial Album, a Descarga Latin jam session recorded at the old KPFA studios in Berkeley in late 1985. It stands as testament to an unsung Bay Area Latin music pioneer. Panamanian-American pianist Carlos Federico lit up the Bay Area in the 1950s with a mambo quintet that had dancers spinning. His compositions were recorded by George Shearing, Malo, Chepito Areas, Ritmo 74 and others. The Carlos Federico Memorial Sextet includes Teddy Strong (congas), Nerio DeGracia (vibes), David Belove (bass) and David Frazier (bongo) all of whom are alumni of Federico’s bands. We’re expecting plenty of surprise guests, as well. For more information, visit: secure.jazzatpearls.com/talent_page.php?id=274

Nicolas Bearde
Buttery Baritone Sings Smooth Jazz and R&B
After honing his art and craft for many years, Bay Area-based vocalist Nicolas Bearde is due for broader recognition, and soon. A supremely gifted singer fluent in soul, jazz and R&B, Bearde has been compared to vocal icons like Lou Rawls, Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway. "He’s a breath of fresh air amidst a mass of polluted ozone-unfriendly pop," declared Blues and Soul magazine in the U.K., where Bearde's music has been accorded an especially enthusiastic reception. Bearde was a founding member of Bobby McFerrin’s a cappella group Voicestra and is a current member of SoVoSó.
