The Stone will host an evcening with two performances with different Lucian Ban ensembles featuring a rare NY appearance by legendary drummer Barry Altschul in a trio setting and quartet with master violinist Mark Feldman. On Thursday December 7th the Stone will present Lucian Ban trio with special guest Barry Altschul at 8 PM and Heiroglyphics, a quartet featuring Mark Feldman on violin, Lucian Ban on piano, Hilliard Hill Greene on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums at 10 PM. Spanning different generations of musicians the ensembles will perform original music that traverses spontaneous improvisation, contemporary classical and today’s jazz idiom.

Nominated twice (2005 & 2006) for 'Best European Jazz Musician" by The Hans Koller Foundation in Austria, pianist and composer Lucian Ban was born in Cluj – Transylvania, Romania. After private piano/harmony lessons he studies composition at Bucharest Music Academy from 1992 to 1995. He establishes the group Jazz Unit in 1995 and releases two albums as a leader for the green records label in Romania. In 1999 he moves to New York where he graduates in Jazz & Contemporary Music at New School University. His American debut recording Somethin' Holy in duet with bari sax Alex Harding was awarded 4 stars by All Music Guide, and was followed by the critically praised quintet album Premonition (2003), Tuba Project with Bob Stewart in 2006, and Playground with Jorge Sylvester in 2006. The Lumination Ensemble co-lead with Alex Harding and featuring drum legend Barry Altschul was nominated “One of the 10 best shows of 2003” by All About Jazz NYC. Since then he has played/recorded with: Alex Harding, Reggie Nicholson, Art Baron, Sam Newsome, Barry Altschul, Jorge Sylvester, Brad Jones, Bruce Williams, Damion Reid, Chris Dahlgren, Pheeroan AkLaff, J.D.Allen, Bruce Cox, Hill Greene, Carlo DeRosa, Curtis Fowlkes, Mark Helias, Gene Jackson, Ron Horton, Nasheet Waits, Bob Stewart, Gerald Cleaver, Derrek Phillips, etc.

Barry Altschul

Legendary drummer Barry Altschul was an original member in the super group CIRCLE featuring Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton and Dave Holland, recorded the seminal album ‘Conference of the Birds” and was a key member of Paul Bley’s trios, Sam Rivers groups, Andrew Hill, Anthony Braxtonetc. He’s considered one of the true masters of modern drumming. Recently he has made appearances on the CIMP label, one with the FAB trio (with Billy Bang and Joe Fonda) and one with the bassist Adam Lane. Through the years Altschul has played or recorded with Roswell Rudd, Dave Liebman, Andrew Hill, Sonny Criss, Hampton Hawes, and Lee Konitz, among others.

Hilliard Greene
Mark Feldman is widely considered a master violinist equally at home in classical, jazz and avantgarde settings. He has toured and recorded extensively with Pharoah Sanders, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Lee Konitz, John Abercombie, etc. He has appeared on more than 200 recordings ranging from Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash to John Zorn, Lee Konitz and Dave Douglas.

Hilliard Hill Greene is one of the great veterans bassists of American jazz with a 40 years career behind him and collaborations with the great masters from Cecil Taylor, Don Pullen, Greg Osby to Charles Gayle, Rashied Ali, Bobby Watson and many more. For the past 10 years he’s the musical director for legendary singer Jimmy Scott.
