 Orbert Davis
The Jazz Institue of Chicago will celebrate the 80th birthday of Miles
Davis with a free concert featuring his former pianist and music
director, Robert (Baabe) Irving III in collaboration with two
trumpeters who represent Davis’ legacy in Chicago: Corey Wilkes and
Orbert Davis. Joining them will be Edwin Daugherty on saxophone and
former Jazz Messenger Lonnie Plaxico on bass along with drummer Charles
Heath. The free concert will take plpace at Austin Town Hall
Park, 5610 W. Lake St. on Friday, November 3rd 7:30 PM.
Robert Lee Irving III, a.k.a. Baabe (almost pronounced like Bobby) is
best known for his eight-year association as keyboardist, producer, and
musical director for the Miles Davis Groups of the 1980's. As a
composer/ producer, Irving has scored three motion pictures and has
produced three Grammy Award nominated projects while working with
artist like Ramsey Lewis, David Murray, Dianne Reeves, Wallace Roney,
Wayne Shorter, Carlos Santana, Grover Washington Jr. and numerous other
jazz greats. He is sought after as a producer for many local jazz and
pop artists.
 Robert Lee Irving III
Orbert Davis and Corey Wilkes represent the continuum of the great
trumpet legacy of Chicago. Davis’ firm anchor in the mainstream of jazz
hasn’t prevented him from collaborating with some of today’s most
experimental musicians, nor does it keep him from creating a whole new
stream of music with his Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra. Wilkes
also refuses to be categorized, as his trumpet voice can be heard with
the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Crosswinds, Greg Osby and his own group
Black Slang. Both trumpet players represent the restless searching for
new territory that characterized Miles Davis throughout his lifetime.
Edwin Daugherty is a versatile musician who is resurfacing after being
“under the radar” in Chicago for many years. Recently featured with the
AACM’s Great Black Music Ensemble he spent his years in the trenches
playing with a variety of musicians including Muhal Richard Abrams, Sun
Ra, various Motown artists and James Brown. Like all of the great
Chicago saxophonists his big, broad sound encompasses the blues,
R&B, big band and creative improvised music.
 Lonnie Plaxico
Special guest Lonnie Plaxico grew up Chicago’s west side, listening to
Chicago's music scene, renowned for its mix of jazz, funk and blues as
a teen. In 1980 Plaxico moved to New York and soon began to appear with
such artists as Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon and Wynton Marsalis. His
first extended tenure was with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers:
between1983 and 1986, Lonnie performed on twelve of Blakey's albums,
including the Grammy Award-winning, New York Scene. In 1986 he joined
Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, continuing with that group until
1993. Presently, Plaxico is the musical director and featured bassist
for Cassandra Wilson; their critically acclaimed and award-winning
collaboration has now spanned fifteen years.
