Jazz Meets Classical at Paquito D’Rivera November 17th & 18th |

On November 17th and 18th, Jazz at Lincoln Center brings one of
the finest musicians of our time to the stage of The Allen Room – the
passionate and powerful clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera. Exploring the
Third Stream, the synthesis of jazz and classical music, Mr. D’Rivera
continues the tradition paved by jazz greats Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw,
Woody Herman and others who merged the classical music of Bernstein and
Stravinsky with jazz.
Concertgoers have the opportunity to attend a free pre-concert tour on
Friday November 17th from 6:00-7:00pm when Jazz at Lincoln Center in
collaboration with Contemporary Posters, New York City, proudly
presents an exhibit of the world-famous Polish School of Posters
showcasing jazz posters of Communist Poland. The exhibit features the
works of artists Rafal Olbinksi, Jan Sawka and Waldemar Swierzy, and is
open for public viewing on the sixth floor of Frederick P. Rose Hall
through November 26th.

Paquito D’Rivera was born in Cuba and began his career as a child
prodigy, playing both the clarinet and the saxophone with the Cuban
National Symphony Orchestra. Mr. D’Rivera formed and performed with
various musical ensembles as a teenager and became one of the founding
members of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, which he subsequently
conducted for two years, he was also founding member and co-director of
the innovative musical group Irakere. While Mr. D’Rivera’s discography
includes over 30 solo albums in jazz, bebop and Latin music, his
contributions to classical music include solo performances with the
National Symphony Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the London
Royal Symphony and the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to
his performing career as an instrumentalist, Mr. D’Rivera has rapidly
gained a reputation as an accomplished composer. Mr. D’Rivera is an
Artist in Residence at New Jersey Performing Arts Center and serves as
a member of the board of directors of many important artistic
organizations in the United States that influence classical and jazz
styles alike. For ten years, Mr. D’Rivera has been Artistic Director of
the famous world-class Festival International de Jazz en el Tambo in
Uruguay. Mr. D’Rivera has been a featured performer with Jazz at
Lincoln Center throughout its history.
