Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, the Chicago jazz landmark, is losing its lease. It's currently located at 59 W Grand (at Clark) in Chicago's River North neighborhood, but not for long. Eighty-year old owner Joe Segal has indicated that this location must close by the end of the year. On Tuesday, September 19th, he told patrons present for Roy Hargrove's first set that he hopes to re-open at another (as yet undetermined) location. He hoped, but was not certain, that a new location would be up and running by January 1st. He encourages all interested parties to sign up for his mailing list, to be notified when the new club is ready to open.
Venerable (but not antediluvian), the Showcase has long been the premiere jazz destination for the Chicago set. It has been operated continuously since 1947, having moved to its current location in 1996. Many famous musicians play at the Showcase while on tour, including Roy Haynes, Chris Potter, Frank Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Danilo Perez, Larry Coryell, James Carter, Winard Harper and others. Ahmad Jamal, Louie Bellson, Cecil Payne, and Sir Charles Thompson are just a few of the multitude of artists who have recorded "Live at the Jazz Showcase" albums or CDs.
The club's website at
www.jazzshowcase.com is quick to point out that the club is "not closing, we are moving!"
