A new generation of New Orleans-style dance-hall bands emerges, the
youthful “South Side Aces” announce their CD-release this weekend with
performances celebrating the release of the band’s new CD Bucktown Bounce. Special guests to
include jazz legends and musical mentors, Bill Evans and Charlie DeVore.
To those who suggest traditional New-Orleans-style dance-hall jazz is
dying off, especially in the northern “jazz hinterlands,” the young and
bold South Side Aces are more than happy to play the
contrarians. The
six-member group will be kicking off the release of their new CD,
Bucktown Bounce, with a high-energy weekend of performances that
underscore their surge onto the scene, their musical dexterity, and
their respect for a tradition that spans the Mississippi River.
On Friday, September 8, from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., they perform at
Patrick’s
Cabaret (Minnehaha and Lake St., Minneapolis) and the $5 cover
includes beans
& rice and other refreshments. On Saturday, September 9, from
3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., they perform at Times Bar
& Café with special guests from of the Hall Brothers
and the Bill
Evans New Orleans Jazz Band. On Saturday, September 9, from 9:30
p.m. – 12:30 a.m., they perform again at Times Bar and Café
(Hennepin & 2nd St NE).
The Southside Aces continue the jazz tradition born in New Orleans and
brought to Minnesota by local legends Doc Evans, the Hall Brothers and
the Bill Evans New Orleans Jazz Band.
“The release of Bucktown Bounce demonstrates the vitality of the music
I have played over a lifetime,” says Charlie DeVore, renowned coronet
player with the Bill Evans New Orleans Jazz Band. “The South Side
Aces
respect the tradition, play with feeling and could qualify as
matinee-idols too—an irresistible combination. And sure enough,
young
people have been turning out and dancing up a storm to their solid New
Orleans rhythms.”
Recorded over two nights at the historic Patrick’s Cabaret in South
Minneapolis, Bucktown Bounce features both standards and lesser-known
compositions in the traditional jazz genre. Band members include
Tony
Balluff on clarinet, Zack Lozier on trumpet, Steve Sandberg on
trombone, Erik Jacobson on sousaphone, Robert Bell on guitar, and Dave
Michael on drums.
