“Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn. They teach you there’s a boundary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.” - Charlie Parker

Josh Workman
And as always, the explosive Contemporary Jazz Orchestra holds down the fort on Monday nights.

Kim Nalley Quintet, Friday-Sunday, September 1-3 Revered local vocalist Kim Nalley opens September with a special weekend residence, with a band including hot, versatile guitarist Josh Workman. More info.

Josh Workman, Thursday, September 7 Speaking of Josh Workman, here he is leading his own ensemble. Workman has been blazing his way through just about every spot on the jazz map since he first started performing in North Beach bars at the tender age of ten. He's earned a name as one of the Bay Area’s most fiery and versatile players during a career in which he's played jump blues with swing band Indigo Swing, gypsy jazz with the Hot Club of San Francisco, funk with New York's Groove Collective, world music with D’Vash and bop with Larry Vuckovich. More info.

Ray Obiedo's Urban Latin Jazz Project, Friday-Sunday, September 8-10 Latin guitar master Ray Obiedo emerged during the 1980s as one of Northern California's most admired and prolific jazz and fusion musicians, touring with artists like Johnny “Hammond” Smith and Julian Priester and leading the popular fusion band Kick, with Sheila E. on drums. Obiedo invades Pearl’s for three exciting nights with his Urban Latin Jazz Project. More info.

Dave Scott Quartet, Thursday September 14 Led by lyrical, soaring trumpeter Dave Scott, a member of Boz Scaggs' touring band, the Dave Scott Quartet offers a foursome of the Bay Area’s most compelling jazz musicians, including pianist Adam Schulman, bassist Marcus Shelby and drummer Jeff Mars. In this classic quartet setting, these four locals stars step out to affirm their status as modern jazz luminaries. The group will be celebrating the release of their new CD, Why Must It Be. More info.

The Eaton-Barics Quintet, Friday-Sunday, September 15-17 The "EBQ" is a mainstream modern jazz ensemble featuring Gabe Eaton and Rob Barics, a pair of hard-blowing, steady-swinging saxmen whose talents are regularly featured in the innovative Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra. An evening with the EBQ is a night of bluesy bebop showmanship and dueling horns in the tradition of the saxophone battles of yore. Eaton and Barics play with the fire of the committed jazz lifers, burning through original compositions and revered standards. More info.

Jarrett Cherner Trio, Thursday, September 21 The Jarrett Cherner Trio performs music that’s rooted in the jazz piano tradition and driven by a fascinating blend of contemporary world influences. Cherner is a San Francisco native, but his bandmates, bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Jorge Pérez-Albela, on the other hand, both hail from Lima, Peru. The trio will be celebrating the release of their excellent new CD, Burgeoning. More info.

Junior Mance, Friday-Sunday, September 22-24 In 1947, when 19-year-old pianist Junior Mance left Roosevelt College in Chicago to join the band of soul/jazz tenor giant Gene Ammons, he was leaping into what would become a fabulous career amidst the greats of the bebop/hard bop universe. After 2 years with Ammons, Junior Mance went on to play with great including Dizzy Gillespie and Lester Young. Soulful and swinging, Junior Mance has forged a bluesy, dexterous, audience-pleasing style that never lacks for excitement or emotional depth. He comes to Pearl’s for a wonderful 3-night stay, fronting an exhilarating trio featuring cool-hand rhythm man Mike Zisman on bass and daring percussion virtuoso Akira Tana on drums. More info.

Veronica Klaus, Thursday September 28 Named “Best Chanteuse” by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in 2004, vocalist Veronica Klaus breathes new life into jazz standards and moody soul classics from the '50s and '60s about love and all that it entails. With a voice that is both powerful and evocative, she can wrap herself around a song like no one else. More info.
