"Jazz is in the sound. Jazz is in the rhythm. And jazz is in the legacy of the music being passed along from musician to musician, and generation to generation. It is our duty, honor, and pleasure to be part of this thread in the fabric of jazz music." - Peter Erskine

Unique Virtuoso Fronts French Caribbean Band Sakésho: Friday-Sunday, August 18 - 20
Andy Narell
Andy Narell

Steel pan virtuoso Andy Narell has spent the last quarter century fusing the subtleties and complexities of the steel pan to an astounding range of jazz and World Music sensibilities. This month, Narell comes to Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco's North Beach with Sakésho, a band deeply immersed in the enchanting music of the French Caribbean. Narell's Sakésho bandmates are pianist Mario Canonge, bassist Michel Alibo and drummer Jean Philippe Fanfant.

Sakésho draws inspiration from the biguine - the syncopated, polyrhythmic music from the islands of Martinique and Guadaloupe, with jazz, calypso, Afro-Cuban and more strengthening the gumbo. In French Creole, sakésho means, "It's gonna be hot."

Andy Narell is a constantly-growing musician with an explorer's eye for experimentaion and collaboration, Narell, within the past few years, has recorded and performed music influenced by music of France, South Africa and the French Caribbean. Put simply, Narell makes fascinating, always surprising music on a unique, lyrical, expressive instrument.

Narell met his Sakésho (pronounced "sah KAY show") bandmates, Canonge, Alibo and Fanfant, in 1993, in Martinique, and they began playing in various combinations whenever opportunities presented themselves. Narell wrote three tunes for them that appeared on his 2000 CD Fire in the Engine Room. After a number of gigs in Europe and the French Caribbean, the musicians felt it was time to reinvent themselves as a band. Sakésho released a self-titled debut in 2002.

Now the group has captured the excitement of their live performances on a new studio recording, We Want You to Say.

“These are the heaviest musicians coming out of the Caribbean,” Narell declares with pride. “People in the United States don’t know much about this music yet, but we believe it’ll happen. Every time we play, we connect with the audience in a powerful way, and people can feel the excitement of a band that’s trying to push the limits.”

Andy Narell and Sakésho will perform 2 shows nightly, at 8:00 and 10:00 pm, at Jazz at Pearl's. Doors open at 7:30. Tickets to all shows are $25.00. Jazz at Pearl's is located at 256 Columbus Ave in San Francisco's historic North Beach district. For more information, visit www.jazzatpearls.com.
