“It’s the group sound that’s important, even when you’re playing a solo. You not only have to know your own instrument, you must know the others and how to back them up at all times. That’s jazz.” - Oscar Peterson

The 16th Annual Rosslyn Jazz Festival features yet another world class lineup of today's headline jazz artists on Saturday, September 9th, from 1:00pm until 7:00pm. Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton, the sophisticated vocal stylings of Vanessa Rubin & Her Trio, the plugged-in, jazz-fusion of The Larry Coryell, Victor Bailey & LennyWhite Trio, and the sensational piano protégée of Ahmad Jamal, Hiromi. Cited among our region’s standout jazz festivals by JazzTimes magazine (Jan/Feb, 2006), the Event occurs in Rosslyn’s Gateway Park, (N. Lynn Street and Lee Highway), in Arlington. It is FREE and open to the Public!

Thr 27-year-old pianist, Hiromi has impressed such notables as Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea and Ahmad Jamal (who now manages her career). Hher Telarc debut (Another Mind) in 2003 and the two that followed (Brain in 2004; Spiral in 2005) have had received critical aclaim. Says mentor/producer/manager Jamal, "Hiromi is changing the musical landscape. Her music, charm and spirit let her soar to unimaginable heights. She is nothing short of amazing." A native of Shizuoka, Japan, Hiromi started playing piano at age 5, was performing in public by age 12, and at 14 performed with the Czech Philharmonic. She eventually enrolled at Berklee in Boston, and has been touring the world, performing for sell-out crowds ever since.

A guitarist's guitarist, Larry Coryell will be performing with two other jazz fusion pioneers, drummer Lenny White and bassist Victor Bailey. White is best-known for his years with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Al DiMeola in Return To Forever, plus his stellar contribution to Miles Davis's epochal "Bitches Brew". Victor Bailey took over the bassist spot from Jaco Pastorius in Weather Report and toured extensively with Madonna. Since he began honing his skills on the guitar in New York City in 1965, Coryell has recorded more than 70 albums as a bandleader, soloist and feature accompanist. Over the years, Larry Coryell has been dubbed the godfather of jazz fusion. Larry Coryell has also been asserting his guitar authority in more straight-ahead contexts on accoustic guitar, but with this dynamic trio of heavyweight performers, there are no boundries.

Vanessa Rubin
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio to parents from Trinidad and Louisiana, Vanessa Rubin arrived steeped in great musical traditions. After achieving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Ohio State University, Rubin taught school for a number of years, all the while with both feet squarely in the jazz lexicon on a path towards a career in music. Along the way she played the regional joints and concerts, dabbled in band management, and continued to hone her skills. By 1982 the jazz cauldron of New York City beckoned and she wisely knew it was that time. Landing at the Jazz Cultural Theater and the tutelage of Barry Harris and Frank Foster proved a wise move as it led not only to veteran acceptance, but to numerous renowned bandstands. Among those early gigs were stints with the likes of Kenny Barron, Pharoah Sanders, Lionel Hampton, and the Mercer Ellington Orchestra. These and subsequent affiliations are clear evidence that Rubin is not only singer, but a true musician.

Nicholas Payton
Trumpeter, composer and Grammy winner Nicholas Payton was born in New Orleans. He is a charter member of the “young lions” that emerged in the 90s, representing the new creative voices in jazz. “We come out of a great tradition of music.” Payton says. “We cannot forget from where the music came. I don't think I can do anything new without having an understanding of what went before me”. Payton’s career has proved that he has listened and learned well—performing and recording with a diverse array of musicians including octogenarian Doc Cheatham, bluesman Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Wynton Marsalis and hip hop artist Common.

The performance schedule follows:
  • 1:00 - 2:15: Hiromi
  • 2:35 - 3:50: Larry Coryell, Victor Bailey & Lenny White Trio
  • 4:10 - 5:25: Vanessa Rubin
  • 5:45 – 7:00: Nicholas Payton

FREE and open to the Public, the event is Co-sponsored by the Rosslyn BID, Arlington Cultural Affairs and Rosslyn Renaissance. Portions of the event will again be broadcast live by jazz station WPFW 89.3 FM, and hosted by several on-air personalities! As always, the Rosslyn Jazz Festival also will offer a range of fantastic foods from finer local restaurants & vendors.
